Vista vs Mac OS X Security: Why George Ou's ZDNet Vulnerability Numerology is Absurd
Daniel Eran Dilger Notorious Zoon Award winner George Ou is again trying to convince the world that Mac OS X's security is in shambles while Microsoft has solved the security crisis in created, at least for users of new PCs and when excluding that pesky problem of vast existing networks of compromised Windows bots that plague us all with mountains of spam no matter what platform we use. This time, the problem isn't just his penchant for getting facts wrong, failing to understand anything about the subjects he writes, orchestrating elaborate conspiracy theories, or dramatically casting derision on anyone who corrects him. Instead, he's teamed up with ZDNet cohorts to disingenuously present false information he knows is wrong because he's been corrected about posting vulnerability statistics from Secunia without context before. Leopard compatible build of GrowlMail

Larry Angell on the Think Secret/Apple Deal
Larry Angell: Anyone who thinks Nick at Think Secret didn’t get a big, fat check from Apple is naive. That was my first thought, too. Those of you who are convinced that Apple cruelly forced Ciarelli to shutter the site against his will should re-read the cryptic press release. Could be a forced shutdown. Could be a payoff. Totally unclear from the press release. Some sort of deal that involved a reasonably-sized payoff, however, strikes me as more consistent with the tone of the press release and the brief comments Ciarelli and his attorneys have made. The irony, of course, is that a site whose entire claim to fame and raison d’être was the exposition of “Apple secrets” has itself agreed to a secret deal with Apple. ★

Add ModMyiFone as an Installer.app source
Filed under: How-tos, iPhoneA while ago, the nice people at ModMyiFone put together their own installer source. This source usually has up-to-date hacks in installable forms shortly after they become public. I've been besieged by kind commenters reminding me to put up a general post to let everyone know about this. If you'd like to add the MMI source to Installer, here's how. In Installer.app, select Sources then tap Edit (top-right corner) and then Add (top-left corner), type in http://modmyifone.com/installer.xml. Tap OK, wait, and then tap Done. MMI gets added as a listed but "untrusted" source. Oh well, you can't have everything.Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

TidBITS Opinion: Think Secret Shuts Down in Wake of Apple Settlement
Adam Engst on today’s Think Secret announcement. By far the most reasonable take I’ve seen so far. The problem is we just don’t know enough about the terms of the settlement — at this point, it’s even a jump to conclude that Apple somehow forced to even wanted Think Secret to cease publication. It’s possible, and some obviously consider it likely, but it is not clear from Ciarelli’s very terse press release. ★

Apple files patent for iPod Boombox…that looks a lot like another iPod Boombox
A new patent filed by Apple that was revealed today shows an Apple designed boombox for the iPod that should make the guys at XtremeMac proud - because they basically already made it. The patent image (above) looks almost identical to the XtremeMac Luna (below), which has been widely well reviewed. iLounge named it the best iPod clock radio of 2007, and it's honestly one of the best iPod audio dock systems I've ever used. You can read my full review of it here. I'm not saying that Apple boombox is a rip-off of the Luna - just that they look a lot alike. If you're looking to get something like the one described in this patent - you can already find it on store shelves.

Apple II: Put the Zoid back in Zoidberg
Filed under: Cult of Mac, Retro MacDr. John Zoidberg is my TV Boyfriend. My husband knows, accepts, and understands. So imagine my surprise when TV Squad's Richard Keller posted about how Futurama's Zoidberg got his name. Sure, yadi yadi background stuff and then...Apple II assembly language? Wow cool! Futurama creator David X Cohen wrote Zoid back in the rocking '80s, when Brøderbund was a gaming force to be reckoned with--although it never actually was released to market. Instead they passed on the software and Cohen was forced to entertain us with cryogenics and one-eyed mutants and, well, you know the rest of the story. "Zoid" inspired the name for my darling Zoidberg, the Dr. McCoy with a mail order medical degree. Now here's where it gets interesting and TUAW-ish. Cohen still actually has his original Zoid game on a 5.25-inch floppy disk and, according to TV Squad, wants to find someone capable of ripping it for use on an Apple II emulator. Any volunteers? We at TUAW have no idea how to get in touch with Cohen but, hey, we thought we'd throw this one out there and see if we can make Internet magic happen! Now open your mouth, and lets have a look at that brain!Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Apple and ThinkSecret Settle Suit
ThinkSecret and Apple (AAPL) have settled a long running lawsuit with a terse statement. The upshot: ThinkSecret protects its sources (good). The bad news is that ThinkSecret shuts down. Here’s the statement:
-
R.I.P. - Think Secret - 1998 - 2007
Think Secret was, at one time, THE Apple Rumors site. If you're new to the online world, of if you've only been reading the Apple sites for a few years, its possible that you never really checked out Think Secret. Over the last few years the site has diminished because of a lawsuit filed against it by Apple. In December of 2004, Think Secret published details about a new Mac and some word processing software. At the 2005 Macworld a few months later, we were introduced to the Mac Mini and iWork. Apple filed a suit against Think Secret claiming that they violated trade secrets. Finally on December 20th, 2007, that suit has been privately settled, in a manner that the creator of Think Secret, Nick Ciarelli, described as “amicable”. As a result of the settlement, Think Secret will no longer be published. It was a good run, and even though the site is shutting down, blogs like this exist and are safe(r) from legal action, because of the steps that Nick Ciarelli went through in fighting the Apple lawsuit. So my hat goes off to Mr. Ciarelli, and I hope that he is successful in whatever he chooses to do in the future.

When viewing an Open or Save dialog in column view mode, try a control-click on the column separator at the bottom of a column to get the choices of Right Size this Column, Right Size All Columns Individually, or Right Size All Columns Equally. 10.5: An alias to ease screen captures of remote Macs
Given what I do for Macworld, I take a lot of screenshots. Sometimes I need to take those shots remotely -- for instance, to grab a screnshot of the login window, you must connect to a logged-out Mac via ssh, then use the screencapture command, as described in this older hint. With 10.5, though, the rules have changed, as described in the man pages for screencapture: To capture screen content while logged in via ssh, you must launch screencapture in the same mach bootstrap hierarchy as loginwindow: PID=pid of loginwindow sudo launchctl bsexec $PID screencapture [options] So to take a screen capture, you need to first get the PID of the login...

10.5: View text clippings in Quick Look
I've been frustrated with Apple's treatment of text clippings; they seem neglected. For example, you can't select and copy the text when you view them in Finder. And with the release of 10.5, I was dismayed to see that Quick Look could not view text clippings either. However, I stumbled across a plug-in for doing just that! All the credit goes to the original developer. It also supports picture clippings, though I haven't tested that. [robg adds: A short history of copying from text clippings: Until 10.3, you couldn't do this at all. When 10.3 came out, you could copy from clippings -- but only the entire clipping. In 10.4, you could actually select some text fro...

Improve Squirrelmail compatibility with Mail in Server
Squirrelmail as included with Mac OS X Server lets you remotely access your Inbox via a web-browser. It also automatically creates sub-folders to store drafts, sent, and trashed emails as done during a Squirrelmail session. These have a folder structure like this: Inbox Drafts Sent Trash When you look at this in Apple Mail, you will see a triangle next to your Inbox, and turning it down reveals the same sub-folders. The purpose of this posting is that this structure is not the same as the default Apple Mail structure, and as such, Apple Mail and Squirrelmail will not automatically be using the same IMAP folders to store drafts, sent, and trash. It is possible in Apple Mail to select one of these Squirrelmail-created folders, and go to the Mailbox menu and select the "Use This Mailbox For..." command to make it the folder to use for that purpose. It is also possible to edit the Squirrelmail config.php file to adjust its settings which a...

10.5: Use text snippets to quickly build accurate searches
Spotlight in Leopard is much, much better. So good, in fact, that I am using it to replace QuickSilver. However, one downside to Spotlight is that it doesn't learn as well as QS so certain Applications/Preferences/Files require a lot of typing. To get around this, I am taking advantage of the new Spotlight commands plus TextExpander to create my own favorites list. First, I realized that if I made the Spotlight search take advantage of the Spotlight Commands listed by David Pogue in this hint, I could create a search that will always work to give me what I want as the top hit. Then, I could link that to a snippet in TextExpander, and I will have created a preferred search that is short and sweet. Thus, I linked the text kind:preferenc...

I recently purchased a D-Link DPR 1260 multifunction print server, and I've been able to share print and scan functions with both Windows and Mac computers on my home network. Unfortunately, the Mac documentation for this print server is almost non-existent. Based on bits I found online, I was able to piece together how to get it to work w/ my MacBook (running 10.4.11): First, do the initial set up and configuration with a Windows PC, as directed in the included quick start manual. To make sure your Mac can see the print server, open up your favorite browser, and enter the IP address of your print server, as assigned by DHCP on your router into the URL box. Disable low battery warnings on Apple Bluetooth devices
For those who use Apple's wireless mouse or keyboard, you might find the appearance of a flashing Bluetooth menu bar item bothersome when the batteries in your device run low. Disabling the item from the menu bar by command-clicking and dragging is only a temporary solution, as it will continuously reappear until you have recharged or replaced your batteries. Since there is no option to prevent this warning from appearing, the following hint may be useful for those who do not use and will never need the Bluetooth menu bar item: Simply move or rename the Bluetooth.menu file from the /System » Library » CoreServices » MenuExtras folder. [robg adds: In general, I do not advocate moving or renaming system files. However, as a user of both the wireless mouse and keyboard, the flashing warning is annoying -- as is the fact that it will automatically add itself back to the menu bar even if you remove it. If you try this hint, I strongly suggest putting the menu...

Avoid Logitech Control Center crashes via a reminder
I love my Logitech MX510 multi-button mouse, but it has a drawback: to use all the nifty buttons on it, you have to use the Logitech Control Center (or pony up for USB Overdrive). While the most recent version (2.4.0 as of this writing) of LCC no longer uses the controversial Unsanity APE, it's not bug-free. In particular, if I unplug my mouse after putting my Mac to sleep, the system won't wake up -- a power-button reset is my only option. The obvious cure is to unplug before sleep, but I have a habit of doing things in the opposite order. The following AppleScript reminds me to do first things first: display dialog "Remove mouse before sleep" with icon caution tell application "Finder" to sleep I use Butler to trigger this with a hotkey, but any technique to launch an AppleScript will...

John Gruber dissects Fast Company's Apple doomsaying
John Gruber at Daring Fireball does a spectacular job today taking apart the latest Fast Company article predicting that Apple has had its day. Not only does he point out the many inaccuracies and straw men in the article, but he does it with great style. You've got to love it when you get real thinking, great writing, and cutting sarcasm all in the same article. I'll add one more point the Fast Company article misses: their doom and gloom is running contrary to what I would claim is the consensus view on Apple currently, namely that not only is it not fading, but that most analysts have underestimated how successful its business results are (a point of view I concur with).Full disclosure: the author is long Apple at the time of writing.Technorati Tags: Apple, Daring Fireball, Fast Company, John Gruber

TUAW review: WireTap Studio shows polish & promise
Filed under: Audio, ReviewsWith the announcement of this year's Macworld Eddy award for WireTap Studio, the Ambrosia Software audio capture/editing app ($69/$30 upgrade-crossgrade) has clearly hit the big time. Serving as the successor to WireTap Pro and a direct competitor to Rogue Amoeba's Audio Hijack Pro/Fission combination, WTS has a clear purpose and a noble goal: it wants to cure you of regret. The design and feature suite for WTS seem to say "Give me a chance to make it easier to get this right," and that's a big plus in any field of endeavor -- it's a shame they don't make marriage counseling software. With WTS, Ambrosia is aiming to set the standard for audio capture and lossless audio on the Mac, and while some features on the editing side may not be fully baked yet, the introductory version is an impressive piece of work. I've been using it to record the TUAW podcasts for the past couple of weeks, and in most ways it's a joy to work with (some exceptions noted below). MacNotables #777 - An Inside Look at Covering Macworld Expo with the MacNotables
Macworld Conference & Expo is the year's biggest Mac event, and that means that it presents unique challenges for all Mac journalists, including the members of the MacNotables panel. Christopher Breen, Adam Engst, Dan Frakes, Ted Landau and Chuck Joiner discuss those challenges and provide an inside look at how they each approach the show. Submitting information early, demonstration copies, printed documentation, press conferences, scheduled appointments, stop-by meetings and more all get the MacNotables treatment, and the panel wraps up with some specific comments on how to get the most from each of them if your company is releasing a product at Expo. Wild Words of Wisdom From Steve Jobs' Most Famous Impostor
During the Center for Automotive Research's Management Briefing Seminar this past August, there was an astonishing number of speakers who cited Apple with the kind of respect and admiration that is uncommon, especially when one takes into account the fact that typically people at automotive conferences don't talk about anything other than automobiles -- or themselves, if they're in the consulting business. Every now and then there is a citation of Boeing, but that's another story.

Japan's 2007 Robot of the Year goes to...
Filed under: Robots Putin. Ok, actually another stoic, semi-autonomous critter is the winner of Japan's Ministry of Economy, Trade, and Industry (METI) 2007 Robot of the Year award. The grand prize goes to the work-horse, industrial robot from Fanuc Ltd. called M-430iA. The multi-axis, greaseless (read: sanitary) robot is part of a food and pharmaceutical handling system. Unlike your unemployed uncle with his GED, this bot can work non-stop, 24 hours a day, accurately picking up 120 items per minute as they roll down a conveyor belt. Other winners are the dancing Miuro in the small- to medium-sized venture category and Matsushita's blood-toting HOSPI bot. The latter apparently winning due to its unique position to assimilate the human race. Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Movie review: 'P.S. I Love You' is an unconvincing heart-tugger
Posted by Dennis SellersBy Ramonda Bissudo More heart manipulating than tear-jerking, P.S. I Love You is practically the definition of schmaltz. Co-written and directed by Richard LaGravenese, the film is so sappy that the trailer alone will practically send you into sugar shock.

Apple shuts down Think Secret?
Filed under: Misc. GadgetsRemember how back in 2005 Apple sued Think Secret, one of the most infamous Apple rumor sites on the block? Apparently TS's publisher Nick Ciarelli (aka Nick DePlume) settled and even managed to keep his inside sources hidden (and the man has many), but paid the ultimate price: he's agreed to shut down the site, presumably for good -- at least in its current incarnation. We've got an email out to their crew to verify because something doesn't seem quite right here, kind of almost feels like a put-on. But who knows, maybe Apple managed to take out one of its most hated sites. Too bad that site also happens to be one of Apple fans' most beloved.[Thanks, Joe] Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments
