Video of the iPhone Pwned project in action
Filed under: Cellphones Those crafty kids on the iPhone Dev Team have already hacked the 2.0 firmware, but now they're getting ready to release the oh-so-creatively-named PWNED tool, which takes iPhone hacking to the next level by patching the bootloader to let you load any firmware image you want -- even images not signed by Apple. That means custom patched firmware can now be loaded directly from iTunes, which simplifies the jailbreaking / unlocking process tremendously, and also means that a patched version of the 2.0 firmware is coming soon. We're putting the tool through its paces right now and we'll have a hands-on with it (and the Dev Team's patched 2.0 firmware) as soon as we get it all working, but check out some highlights after the break, and hit the read link for more info.Continue reading Video of the iPhone Pwned project in action Permalink | Email this | Comments

Linux becomes only OS to escape PWN 2 OWN unscathed
Filed under: Laptops After a week full of Red Bulls, Fruit by the Foot and dreams of In-N-Out, the mighty Sony VAIO loaded with Linux stood as the only machine unhacked by the end of the PWN 2 OWN hacking contest at CanSecWest. As you're well aware by now, the MacBook Air on display was seized in two minutes by the presumably well prepared Charlie Miller, and after two full days of work, Shane Macaulay and a few of his 1337 associates managed to crack the Vista rig on Friday. Reportedly, Shane and his pals weren't expecting to do battle with the extra protected SP1 version of Vista, and while the exact loophole won't be divulged, we are told that it was a cross-platform bug that "took advantage of Java to circumvent Vista's security." In the end, it was reported that some folks on hand had discovered bugs in the Linux OS, but many of them "didn't want to put the work into developing the exploit code that would be required to win the contest."[Image courtesy of TippingPoint] Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Mac Shot First: 10 Reasons Why CanSecWest Targets Apple
Daniel Eran Dilger The details emerging from the CanSecWest security contest fill out a story that is bigger than the simple “Mac Shot Firstâ€? headlines convey. This was not a contest where three systems were placed in an equal foot race and the Mac simply lost due to being a slower runner. Here's why. (more…)

Firmware Restoration CD 1.5
Filed under: Software UpdateYesterday, Apple released an updated Firmware Restoration CD (version 1.5) for all Intel Mac models. The Firmware Restoration CD is used to restore the firmware on an Intel-based Macintosh in case of an emergency (such as an interrupted firmware install). You can download the Firmware Restoration CD from the Apple Support downloads website for your specific Mac. These CDs are great to keep around in case of firmware install issues (especially if you only have one Mac).Apple makes a note that you cannot use this CD to restore the firmware that has already been successfully applied to your system; this is used only for systems that did not successfully get a firmware update applied.Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

iLiberty frees my iPhone
Filed under: iPhone My refurb AT&T iPhone finally arrived and I found a chance to test out iLiberty+ this afternoon. After wasting a day jailbreaking and messing with my new iPhone, I just could not bypass that annoying activation screen. Yes, I could ssh into the unit and run stuff from the command line but I had to keep working my way around "Connect to iTunes" to get to the SpringBoard screen. So I gave iLiberty+ a try. After a few false starts, it got going and worked brilliantly. I was able to track progress with the on-screen updates and not only did it activate my iPhone but allowed it to work with a disposable Cingular SIM I had on-hand. All in all, a great success. After activation though, I could not get iLiberty to work with the iPhone still connected. I wanted to grab screen shots and the program would not launch and stay launched. (I have crash logs if any of the developers are interested.) So in the end, I unplugged the iPhone in order to get the one screen shot you see here. Part of me wanted to deactivate the iPhone and try again for a screen grab gallery but a much smarter part of me asked "why mess with success?" Given how badly I messed up the phone several times today, that was the part I listened to. A later, complete reboot seemed to fix the problem but I was in no position to go backwards after a day fending off cranky children and an impatient husband, all of whom seemed to think there was a world outside of iPhone.Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Scrabble for the iPod: Old-School Gaming at Its Best
My sister-in-law, Mary, thinks she is God's gift to Scrabble tiles. No kidding: This woman believes she can divine key tiles from the bag so that she can create killer words. She plays as if the existence of mankind depends on it. Playing Scrabble against her is both nerve-racking and satisfying. There's always a challenge when I come up with a triple score word that includes high-point letters like K, J, X, Q and Z. The problem is that I don't come up with those words often enough.

Why the App Store won’t stop hackers
Since the announcement of the iPhone SDK (how many months ago?), it’s been assumed that the advent of Apple-endorsed third-party applications would signal the death of jailbreaking as we know it. After all, why would hackers go through the trouble of cracking each new firmware…

Apple looking to put handwriting recognition into the iPhone?
Filed under: Cellphones, Tablet PCs We know Apple's had its Inkwell handwriting recognition software in OS X for years now, so we might have otherwise just totally glossed over this Handwriting Recognition Engineer job listing on Apple's site. Except for the part that reads: "The recognition technology you create may extend beyond Mac OS X to other applications and the iPhone." They always love to throw those little tidbits in there, don't they?[Via Macrumors] Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Apple TV update 2.0.1
Filed under: Software Update, Apple TV Apple has updated the Apple TV software to version 2.0.1. This is the first update to the Apple TV since the game-changing Take 2 software was released. Generally, with these "point releases," Apple doesn't change many things (mostly bug fixes and such). The only significant difference in the update is the implementation of Genres in the "My Movies" list. Have you noticed any new features that we haven't covered? Be sure to tell us in the comments. Thanks to everyone that sent in a tip!Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

.Mac syncing coming to iPhone 2.0?
Filed under: Rumors, .Mac, iPhoneOne of the biggest questions that I had following the iPhone SDK event was how we non-Enterprise users were going to get the cool new wireless syncing features promised to ActiveSync Exchange users. My first guess was that Apple was planning to fold something like that into .Mac, and now iPhone Alley has unearthed something to suggest this might be right. In the just released SDK beta 2, iPhone Alley found a string within a preference bundle that reads: "Syncing with this Dot Mac account will turn off syncing for other Dot Mac accounts and delete any existing synced data." This suggests the possibility of wireless syncing for non-Exchange users. Frankly, this would make a lot of sense. It would add considerably to the (presently somewhat questionable) value of .Mac and give us consumer types access to some of iPhone 2.0's neatest features.Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments
