Microsoft Surface launching April 17th... with AT&T
Filed under: Misc. Gadgets No, Microsoft hasn't suddenly transformed its 30-inch, multi-touch Surface into a big-ass cellphone. It has, however, chosen AT&T to launch the world's first Surface into retail. Shoppers in New York, Atlanta, San Antonio, and San Francisco will be treated to what amounts to the novelty (at least initially) of learning about a device (Samsung BlackJack II, pictured) by simply placing it atop the Surface. They'll also have the ability to explore interactive coverage maps. Later, users will be able to drag ringtones, graphics and video and drop it into "the phones." Note their use of "the" and not "your" phone in the press release. Nevertheless, we're happy to see Microsoft get the technology out the door on its long march towards consumerdom.Gallery: Microsoft Surface launching April 17th... with AT&TUpdate: Interestingly enough, AT&T's flagship iPhone will not be one of the first phones demonstrated on Surface. Perhaps AT&T / Microsoft worry about a multi-touch collision creating consumer strangelets. Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Five Factors Shifting the Future of Malware and Platform Security
Daniel Eran Dilger The previous article, The Unavoidable Malware Myth: Why Apple Won't Inherit Microsoft's Malware Crown, outlined that Microsoft's malware crisis is a product of that company's engineering mistakes, not an unavoidable problem facing whatever computing platform becomes the most popular in the future. Even for those holdouts who choose to ignore the realities of the malware economy–so they can insist that the only reason Macs aren't infected with viruses is because Apple isn't selling enough of them–there are other reasons why future platforms, including Apple's Mac and iPhone, aren't fated to be plagued with Microsoft's malware crisis of the past and present. There are five factors related to the future of computing platforms that will prevent Apple from inheriting Microsoft's malware legacy. Here's why these factors will have such a significant impact on the future of malware, and why the world's greatest malware threat will continue to be firmly attached to Microsoft, the company that introduced the epidemic to the world in the first place. Survey finds most iPhone owners aren't Mac users
Filed under: Cult of Mac, Apple, iPhoneRubicon Consulting recently published a survey (PDF) from a selected group of 460 iPhone owners. Here is a summary of the results: 80% of iPhone owners said they were "satisfied" with the device 72% of users said they use the iPhone at least once a day for e-mail 55% of those surveyed said that the iPhone has increased their mobile browsing Almost half of the owners changed their carrier 40% of those that switched, switched from a smartphone device 1/3 of iPhone owners carry 2 phones 13% of iPhone owners surveyed have unlocked iPhones 1 out of 10 users reported "hand pain" after use 1 out of 5 iPhones were purchased as a gift Only 20% of the users surveyed said that they had both an iPod and Mac; while only 5% said they had had a Mac and no iPod. Half of iPhone owners are under 30 years of age and students took up 16% of iPhone usage. While not surprising, the most desired new feature is applications and Exchange support. iPhone owners are of course paying more for their monthly phone bill -- the average phone bill before iPhone purchase was around $78/mo. and after purchase was around $97/mo. Mortal Kombat heading to iPhone/iPod Touch?
Filed under: Gaming, Rumors, iPhoneOK, confession time, without a shadow of a doubt, Mortal Kombat/Mortal Kombat II is one of my favorite video games of all time. I don't really want to admit how much of 6th grade was wasted playing the SNES version of MK II.TRMK.org is reporting that a port of Mortal Kombat is being developed by Midway for the iPhone and iPod Touch. Apparently Ed Boon (Mortal Kombat co-creator) posted coded message on his site, spelling out TOUCH. TRMK says that a source revealed to them that a Touch version IS in the works and was also able to provide a very, very convincing video demo. The demo shows what looks to be motion controlled movements for the characters and the animations and actions looked pretty realistic to simply be pre-recorded (though I'm not ruling that out). From the characters in the Demo, it appears that this port is either of Mortal Kombat Trilogy or perhaps a new edition altogether.Keep in mind that today is April 1 and that this could all be a hoax/joke. Mortal Kombat was one of (if not the first) fighting games to feature hidden characters and other Easter eggs ("Toasty!" and Noob Saibot anyone?), so this could all just be a really good prank. Still, the potential to see Mortal Kombat on an iPod Touch or iPhone is pretty exciting -- at least to a old skool gamer geek like myself. What about you? Would you play a 2-D platform fighting game on your iPhone or iPod Touch? Thanks Luke!Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Reader Feedback Request: Help, help, my I can’t surf the Web!
Ok, so here's a problem I've been having since I moved into my new house. This has been ongoing for months, and I can't seem to find a fix for it…so today, I am handing it over to you. Please help me. I changed ISPs today because the previous company was no longer interested in helping me with this issue, and didn't want to come to the house. So I switched. Now, I'm having the same problem with the new service. The technician checked the lines, so it must be problem with the machines. The question is - how could this be a problem for both macs, when they were running Tiger, and now that they are running Leopard? It might be the router - but I tried that - you may remember back when I bought an Airport Extreme to fix this issue - it didn't help, and I ended up taking it back and reusing the same router that I still have. So here's the problem - surfing the web is dial-up levels of slow sometimes. It seems like it happens every time the browser looks for the DNS…downloading large files is no problem. Speed tests are no problem. I'm getting the speed I pay for. Do you have any ideas? Any questions that might help me get this sorted out? Anything at all?

Suit Alleges Shady Marketing of iMac's Color Palette
Apple faces a legal challenge about its marketing practices for iMac desktop computer. The suit, filed by Kabateck Brown Kellner, in U.S. District Court in San Jose, Calif., claims that Apple falsely marketed the monitor for the new desktop as an improved version of its 24-inch iMac monitor. The complaint alleges that the new 20-inch monitor displays 98 percent fewer colors than the 24-inch screen and uses a 6-bit LCD screen, which has a narrower viewing angle, less color depth and less color accuracy.

Best of April Fool's Day online
Filed under: HumorWell, we admit we were snookered by the iPhone Dev Team's "we're selling out" alert, and so was our sister site -- but on a day when the hoaxes range from the desperately unfunny to the merely goofy to the silly-but-funny to the triumphantly hysterical, who can keep anything straight? Google's various flavors alone account for more than a dozen fake stories. Here's a couple of Mac-flavored gags that you might have missed: TidBITS has an entire 4/1-themed front page, with some gems like "US Federal Court Declares Email Bankruptcy Illegal." The introduction of the "Helvetica Serif" font, which cracks me up. Download Squad's warning about LSD in Apple products. I'd call shenanigans on this, but I'm very busy shooing away the multicolored bats. Macenstein's "Top 10 ways to DEcrease productivity on your Mac," which describes at least two or three bad practices I actually do already The full-monty retro reskinning of MacOSXHints ThinkGeek's alternative product lineup, including Wii Sports for iPhone Likewise, AppleTell has a collection of Apple-past stories up front today Do you love the cognitive dissonance of April 1, or despise the silly, lame jokes that seem to propagate? Sprint’s Samsung Instinct: Another Shameless iPhone Knockoff
I enjoy how in this initial report, based on a press release and press screenshots, Gizmodo dubs it a “decent iPhone competitor”, but then when they actually got to see one firsthand it ends up — surprise surprise — that it’s buggy as hell. Plus the web browser, despite the magic bullet of 3G networking, is “painfully slow”. Update: Good analogy from Jason Snell. ★

Hey Apple: about those iTunes Rentals...
Filed under: iTS This is the kind of stupid I am: I go to the iTunes store and when movies sound really good, I don't want to rent them -- because what will happen if I like them and then decide to buy? I mean, we rented Wii "Cooking Mamma" from Blockbuster and then my kids fell in love with the game so I ended up buying it, paying a $6 premium for trying it first. The iTunes store has the same dilemma. Hey Apple, you really ought to give an option of "Liked it? Buy it!" for $2 off or so after renting. So am I unique in my irrationality here? Do good movie reviews make you hesitate to rent? Would an iTunes rent-to-own option help push you over the edge into renting? Speak up in the comments.Permalink | Email this | Comments

Apple releases new iPhone Ads, ‘Bet’, ‘Brilliant, and ‘Music Store’
Today Apple has posted 3 new iPhone ads on the web. The ads continue to focus on different way to use the iPhone, and I think they do an excellent job of explaining just exactly why you “need” this device. Out of the three, 'Brilliant' is my least favorite. It shows off the iPhone's “almost-GPS” like capabilities, which are great - but pale in comparison to a true GPS. 'Bet' is my favorite, as I have found myself settling an argument or debate with others by looking up the answer on the iPhone on numerous occasions. “Music Store” as you might have guessed, shows you how to operate the iPhone Music Store. You can watch all three ads right here.

Sprint Nextel Swings for the Stands With iPhone Rival
Sprint Nextel on Tuesday said it is betting heavily on a touch-screen phone that appears to be the closest thing the U.S. market has seen to Apple's vaunted iPhone. The Samsung Instinct will be available in June for a yet undetermined price, Sprint announced at CTIA Wireless, a cell phone industry trade show in Las Vegas. Executives hinted that the price would be substantially lower than the $399 for the cheapest iPhone. Sprint, which has been losing subscribers, will spend $150 million to advertise the Instinct when it launches.

Sprint hits back with the Samsung Instinct
Filed under: Cellphones See that? That's the Samsung Instinct, due to hit Sprint in June. Better get used to it, because Sprint's about to start hyping it with the biggest marketing push in its history -- it's going to drop some $100M on this lil' guy. Of course, there's no escaping the comparison to a certain other touchscreen candybar phone, and Sprint's not backing down from a fight -- it's just being willfully obtuse, saying that while the Instinct wasn't developed in response to the iPhone, the company recognized that it needed "a product from a usability standpoint that can compete." Um, sure. Samsung and Sprint worked together to simplify the UI, which features a reconfigurable home screen, music, and TV features, but we're going to hold off judgment until we get a look at the browser in person a little later. One more shot after the break.[Thanks, Billytickets]Gallery: Sprint hits back with the Samsung InstinctContinue reading Sprint hits back with the Samsung Instinct Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Transfer iTunes song ratings after re-ripping library
I originally ripped my entire CD collection into iTunes at the 128 kbps quality setting, but recently I decided to re-rip it at 256 kbps. After completing the re-rip, a problem remained: All of the song ratings in my old iTunes library were now absent from the new one. Luckily, I had exported the old iTunes library database using the File » Export command, so all of my ratings were preserved. Share a Mac-formatted drive with a Linux server via iSCSI
Using ext3-formatted disks to create file-based iSCSI targets have one major drawback: They can only be read by another Linux machine with iSCSI. But what about attaching a pre-formatted drive as target? Take a suitable Linux distro (eg. CentOS 5.1; it needs to have support for the Apple partition type in the kernel!) and install iSCSI Enterprise Linux (latest stable seems to run fine with Leopard). Attach the Mac-formatted drive to the machine, but do not mount it (you may if the distro has HFS+ support, but you don't need to). Let assume it's an external SCSI-RAID (or Firewire, USB) and is /dev/sda. You then create, in ietd.conf, a new target: Target iqn.2008-03.local.linux:storage.sda3.raid Lun 0 Path=/dev/sda3,Type=blockio Depending on your server's hardware, a Type=fileio may give a better performance; you can simply try both out. /dev/sda3 is the third Mac partition on the drive; you may have to find out which partition numb...

Apple turns 32 today
32 years ago today, in 1976, a small company was founded by 3 guys (Steve Jobs, Steve Wozniak, and Ronald Wayne) to sell a product called the Apple I personal computer. Today, the world is a completely different place because of the innovations of Steve Wozniak, Steve Jobs, and all the amazing men and women who have helped change the world with computers over the last 32 years. It is simply astounding how things have changed in such a relatively short time. A large portion of that change, has been because of the geniuses that work at Apple, Inc. Today we salute them, and cannot wait to see what they do next. Happy Birthday Apple.

This news comes on the heals of a study by a couple security researchers from IBM (hmmmm, suspicious) who say that Apple is slow at fixing their 0-day security vulnerabilities (for those who don't feel like popping over to Wikipedia, 0-day means nobody knew a particular weakness existed before). They say [PDF] that Microsoft is getting faster at fixing their 0-day issues, while Apple is getting slower. I wonder if it has anything to do with Microsoft's years of experience is fixing so many 0-day attacks… Anyway, the thing that worries me the most about the 10.5.3 news is that I couldn't find anything about Quick Look. The ability to look quickly at files makes Leopard so much more attractive than many of its other features. I am hoping for the ability to print straight from Quick Look. Now that would be grand! What else should be included in the 10.5.3 Leopard update? Via PC World and The Register

Happy Birthday, Apple
Filed under: Cult of Mac, Apple, Apple History The year is 1976, two high school students young guys (Steve Wozniak and Steve Jobs) are in their garage working on their latest invention: the Apple I. Almost 200 of these machines were built before the fruity little company known as Apple Computer became a reality. Fast forward to April 1, 2008, Apple has now surpassed 32 years of making wonderful products that capture the imagination of everyone. Their products have almost a "magical" feel to them. iPods, iMacs, Mac OS X; Apple certainly has come a long way since 1976. Here's to wishing Apple a happy 32nd Birthday ... we certainly can't wait to see what the next 32 years bring.Do you have a story about Apple's early days? Video: Hands-on Sony's NWZ-A829 Walkman with Bluetooth
Filed under: Features, Portable Audio, Portable Video We've had the good fortune of putting a Sony NWZ-A829 through its paces over the last few days. Remember, that's Sony's top of the line, 2.4-inch, QVGA Walkman with stereo Bluetooth A2DP and 16GB of flash. With Sony CEO, Howard Stringer, ceding portable audio victory to Apple, we had high hopes for the NWZ-A829 as an out of the box video player. After all, Howie said 9 months ago, "We have worked very hard to catch up so that in the age of video we will not suffer as much as we did in audio." So how did it do? See our take after the break.Gallery: Sony Walkman NWZ-A829Continue reading Video: Hands-on Sony's NWZ-A829 Walkman with Bluetooth Permalink | Email this | Comments

Photoshop Elements 6 for the Mac Brings Pro Power to Everyday Users
It took a couple of years -- as well as a few months of jealousy -- but the wait for the next version of Adobe Photoshop Elements for the Mac is over: Adobe is now shipping version 6 for the Mac. The last version of Photoshop Elements for the Mac was version 4, which means Adobe completely skipped over the Mac community when it came out with version 5. To make matters worse for Mac-loving photo fixers, the company shipped Elements 6 for Windows way back in September of 2007. The wait was terrible, but it's hard to argue with the results.

Greenhouse's absurd 8x optical zoom kit for cameraphones
Filed under: Digital Cameras Guess what's going to happen when you bolt Greenhouse's 8x optical zoom onto your pathetic little cameraphone lens? Right, 8 times the slop. Nevertheless, we're curious to try the kit -- which includes the tripod and universal lens mount -- ourselves. Just not ¥8,800 (about $88) curious.Gallery: Greenhouse's 8x optical zoom kit for cameraphones[Via Akihabara News] Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments
