More iPhone 3G buzz from Uncle Walt
Filed under: Found Footage, iPhone You have to smile a bit at the role Walt Mossberg plays in the geekosphere -- he's like the chairman of the Federal Reserve, what with the excitement that his offhand comments can generate. In this case, towards the end of a rather interesting rant about the obstacles to video delivery ("8 minutes of horrible commercials in a 30-minute show... there are lots of people who could care less about erectile dysfunction... in the US, we really suck at broadband") captured on beet.tv, he casually mentions that the iPhone 3G is coming within 60 days. What, now? We've been gaining confidence in the time horizon for a new rev of the iPhone hardware along with everyone else these past few days, but having the imprimatur of Mr. M on a June 3G release makes it all seem more real, somehow. Thanks to everyone who sent this in.[via 9to5Mac / Computerworld]Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Dance piece, for iPod shuffle
Filed under: Analysis / Opinion, iPod Family, Multimedia, iTunes, AppleApparently this iPod-enabled dance performance has been around for quite a while (here's an NYT piece on it from 2006), but it's the first we've heard of it, and it's pretty amazing. The 87-year-old choreographer, Merce Cunningham, who has collaborated with John Cage and Andy Warhol among others, has created a dance performance piece called eyeSpace. Apparently, the music, which can be downloaded preperformance and is written by composer Mikel Rouse (no relation at all to TUAW's own Mike Rose) plays in the audience's iPods while the dancers dance (and other atmospheric sounds are added during the performance as well). Very interesting. The NYT piece seems to hint that the tracks are meant to be played in random order on each iPod, which would mean that the timing wasn't too important, but it's a cool idea (even more cool that it's done by an artist of Cunningham's age, but what else do you expect from a Mac fan?).Definitely reminds me, too, of the MP3 Experiments done by Improv Everywhere in New York. Just goes to show you that we're still in the middle of the digital music revolution -- when we can listen to almost anything anywhere at any time, who knows what other creative folks will come up with?Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Found footage: Quake 3 multiplayer on iPod touch
Filed under: Gaming, iPod Family, Found Footage, iPhone Despite getting punk'd on the Mortal Kombat for iPhone April Fool's joke, we're still innocent and trusting enough to buy into this video demo of Quake 3 running -- in multiplayer, accelerometer-enabled fragging glory -- on a pair of iPod touch handhelds. Is it real? Is it coming soon to a jailbroken device near you? Can you even stand the suspense until June when the SDK-based games start shipping? Yep, us neither.[via 9to5 Mac / Techmeme]Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

TUAW takes Macminicolo for a spin
Filed under: Features, Reviews, Mac miniTUAW was recently given the chance to test drive a remote server at Macminicolo, the colocation service that specializes exclusively in Mac Minis. We first covered Macminicolo in 2005 and just mentioned their recently-won "My Mac Server Contest". Given the improvements in the Mini since 2005, I took the challenge to satisfy some curiosities. For a couple of weeks I tried everything I could think of to see what solutions the meager Mini could provide. I got a good idea of what was possible and ran a few tests of my own on various Mini-hosted services to see if it could really hold its own in the realm of XServes and big-iron hosting.Continue reading TUAW takes Macminicolo for a spinRead | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Quake 3 hits the iPod touch, makes for portable LAN party
Filed under: Portable Audio, Portable Video Future generations will most likely divide the timeline of history at this point: when Quake 3 achieved motion-sensing, wireless network play on two iPod touches. Just think, less than a year ago we were salivating (or at least mildly enthused) at the prospect of rocking Doom on this thing, and now Quake 3 Arena is yours for the taking -- or at least will be once we get any sort of hard info on this app.[Via PMP Today]Continue reading Quake 3 hits the iPod touch, makes for portable LAN party Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Walt Mossberg promises 3G iPhone in 60 days
Filed under: Cellphones While talking up web as a video delivery medium at a Beet.TV executive summit, Walt Mossberg casually yet confidently mentioned that the iPhone will be going 3G in 60 days. Of course, it doesn't take an illustrious position as tech pundit to the masses to figure out a 3G iPhone is just around the corner: price cuts, stock shortages and word from Ralph de la Vega himself have rapidly narrowed down the launch window, but a semi-guarantee from Uncle Walt is certainly icing on the cake. The video snippet is after the break, or hit up the read link for the whole thing.[Via 9 to 5 Mac; thanks, TedB]Continue reading Walt Mossberg promises 3G iPhone in 60 days Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Life with the MacBook Air
Filed under: Reviews, MacBook AirIt's been almost two months now, and life is still almost perfect living and working with the MacBook Air. To recap, for those of you just joining us, in previous articles I told you my reasons for ordering a MacBook Air. Then, after having it for a few days, posted a fairly well-regarded review of the new Mac.Now, after a bit of time has gone by and I've had a chance to use the MBA on a daily basis, it's time for an update on my experiences, both good and bad. To recap just a bit more, my MacBook Air of choice is the 1.6 Ghz version with the 80GB SATA HD. I did not spring for the solid-state drive model, although I really wanted it. But even for a Mac-lover like myself, the cost was just a bit too high.At the moment, the MBA has various applications installed on it including Adobe Photoshop CS3, the iLife '08 and iWork '08 suites, Office 2008, and it's recently been updated to OS X 10.5.2 with all other various updates applied. Ok, that's it for the recap, let's get to the update.Continue reading Life with the MacBook AirRead | Permalink | Email this | Comments

miShare Tune Swapper: Almost There but Still Buggy
In the world of iPod accessories -- 4,000-plus and counting -- the ones worth the money are those that improve the listening experience. I have two for you today, one that will be great when the bugs are worked out and a pair of headphones that make iPod portability even better. Let's start with the almost-there product. "Almost" because it worked with some iPods I tested but not all. I often won't write about a product proving unreliable, but I really like what this does and, more importantly, I believe that the people building it will soon get it right.
