Caffeine control
Filed under: FreewareWe're once again talking about Caffeine from lighthead Software (makers of Papaya), the freeware menubar app that keeps your screen awake. It's now at version 1.0.2 with one new feature that makes it even more useful: time-limited activation. A command-click on the coffee cup icon in your menubar presents a menu that allows you to set a variable duration for Caffeine to be activated. Got a 10 minute video to show a friend, but your screen is set to dim or go into Screensaver before the end? Set Caffeine for 15 minutes and forget about it. We covered Jolt a while back, and this feature was available... for a small, $5 fee (of course, it's worth mentioning that those five dollars are donated to charity). But Caffeine has caught up and it remains free. Update your copy or take it for a spin at lighthead's website.Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Ask TUAW: recording online radio, screenshots, rescuing a Performa, restoring a Time Machine backup and more
Filed under: Features, Troubleshooting, Ask TUAWIn this round of Ask TUAW we'll be considering questions about recording online radio, making screenshots, rescuing an old OS 7.5 Performa, changing a Time Machine backup to a larger disk, editing mp4 metadata, doing a sync when plugging in an external storage device and more.As always your suggestions are most welcome, and questions for next week should be left in the comments. When asking a question please include which machine you're running and which version of OS X, as certain answers will vary between different Macs and Tiger vs. Leopard, etc. (we'll assume you're running Leopard if you don't specify). And now, on to the questions!Continue reading Ask TUAW: recording online radio, screenshots, rescuing a Performa, restoring a Time Machine backup and moreRead | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Why does QuickTime share the headline in article on plug-in flaws?
Posted by Dennis SellersShameless headline grabbing? A recent study by Symantec found that ActiveX accounted for 79 percent of all plug-in flaws found between July and December of 2007; QuickTime was second with eight percent . But when [url=]Infoworld reported the story, the headline read: “ActiveX, QuickTime are buggiest browser plug-ins.”

10.5: Search multiple locations in Leopard
This is similar to a problem outlined in this previous hint, but for the time being, I've solved the problem with an ugly hack, so I'm submitting it as a new hint.In 10.5, there's no way to do a smart search on multiple locations (and even searching one specific location is a pain). I've searched everywhere and found no real solutions, but I've discovered it does work if you manually edit a previously-saved search in a text editor. This is obviously no good for quick searches, but if you want to use a saved search as a smart folder, this method will work.First make a search with the other criteria you want (date, filetype, etc), but for any location and save it. Then go to your user's Library ?? Saved Searches, and you will see the search you just created. I'm not sure what other text editors you ...

So You've Jailbroken Your iPhone - Now What?
Until iPhone 2.0 software is released in June, if you want to add third-party software to your iPhone, you first need to jailbreak it. Jailbreaking, however, is only the first step. The next step is to actually install your choice of software. For this task, hackers have standardized on an iPhone application called, appropriately enough, "Installer." This program downloads software directly to your iPhone, much as Apple's App Store promises to do. If you decide to jailbreak your iPhone, you'll need to get comfortable with this Installer.

Review: Photoshop Elements 6 a long time coming but worth the wait
Posted by Dennis SellersYou can think of Adobe Photoshop Elements 6 for the Mac in one of two ways: as Photoshop for the rest of us or as iPhoto Pro. Either way it's a must-have tool for those who don't need the bells and whistles of Photoshop itself.
