IBM considering Macs for employees?
Filed under: Analysis / Opinion, SwitchersIs Big Blue about to go Mac?Well, not really. Roughly Drafted Magazine has obtained a document which describes a pilot program at IBM that has employees using Macs for their day-to-day work. Now, they aren't looking to ditch Windows in favor of Mac OS entirely. Instead, IBM wants to have diverse operating systems available to employees. From the document:"Research is focusing on providing an IBM application stack on multiple Operating Systems, rather than be confined to one or the other."At the end of the program's first phase, a full 86% of participants asked to keep their Macs, leaving comments like "It has been easier learning the Mac than learning Vista" and "Getting wireless running was a piece of cake on the Mac, much simpler than the PC" (amen to that, brother). Of course, this is probably an easier sell now that IBM doesn't make PCs any more.Someone cue the chick with the sledgehammer. [Via Infinite Loop]Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Apple updates Safari to 3.1.1
Today Apple released a new update to Safari bringing the web browser to version 3.1.1. The support page offers the usual vague explanations and SHA1 Digests, but following the link trail brings you to this page outlining the security content in this update. For those of us on Mac OS X, the update alleviates the danger that visiting a malicious website may result in cross-site scripting or that... [read more at MacMerc.com]

Apple releases Safari 3.1.1 security update
Under cover of darkness, Apple released Safari 3.1.1 via Software Update tonight. In typical Apple form the description is purposefully vague, recommending the update “for all Safari users” and telling us that it “includes improvements to stability, compatibility and security.” A-ha. Apple’s About the security content of Safari 3.1.1 page tells a little more, stating that [...]

Apple Posts Safari 3.1.1 Update & EFI Firmware Update 1.5 for MacBook Pros
Apple posted an update to Safari that – amongst other fixes – patches 4 vulnerabilities in the Windows version and 2 in the OS X version of their flagship browser. One of the Windows issues – CVE-2007-2398 – is especially tricksy: “[the vulnerability allows] a web page to change the contents of the address bar without loading the contents of the corresponding page. This could be used to spoof the contents of a legitimate site, allowing user credentials or other information to be gathered.” The sad thing is that this was fixed in a previous beta but re-introduced. Sounds like Apple developers need some remedial lessons in secure coding practices. The truly nasty bug is CVE-2008-1026 which can allow remote code execution due to improper handling of Javascript regular expressions. Apple also calls out props to Robert Swiecki of Google Information Security Team, David Bloom and Charlie Miller for finding and reporting these bugs. Not much information on the firmware update, but Apple claims it fixes some stability issues, so fire up Software Update! Early Mac Pros finally get their NVIDIA GeForce 8800 GT Upgrade Kit
Filed under: Hardware, Mac ProWhen Apple introduced the new Mac Pros, they came with new graphics cards... that weren't compatible with previous Mac Pros. This has caused some consternation amongst owners of the neglected machines, who have been wondering for a while when their problem-ridden video cards might get some Apple love. Fret no more, it's here.If you're looking for the extra power of the GeForce 8800 GT for your pre-2008 Mac Pro, head to the product page. And, as noted by my friend (and perturbed pre-2008 Mac Pro owner) Peter Boysen, there's actually a somewhat surprising price drop of about $70 from the previously available kits. Thanks Will, Chris and Peter!Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Psystar's Open Computer: A $400 Rotten Apple Scam?
News of a $400 Mac clone on the market spread like wildfire this week -- only to be supplanted by suspicions that the offering may well be a giant fraud. The first inkling that something was wrong came when a message appeared on the Web site of the mysterious vendor, Psystar, stating it could not take orders over the phone but only via the Internet. The Web site has been online, then off, and then on again, ever since news of the phenomenal bargain reached critical mass on Monday.

Safari 3.1.1 released
Filed under: Internet, Software UpdateSafari 3.1.1 is now available for both Windows and OS X. According to Apple, this update "includes improvements to stability, compatibility and security."On the security front, this security bulletin outlines the changes. It appears as if a vulnerability existed that could allow malicious sites to spoof URL headers or execute arbitrary code. There are two issues that specifically affect the Windows version of Safari, so users on both platforms should be sure to update.Just a reminder -- some plugins, like Saft, will stop working after installing the update. Visit the plugin author's homepage to download the newest versions as they become available. Thanks Ben!Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Sega Toys and ZMP team up for Miuro-like Music Robot ODO
Filed under: Portable Audio, Robots ZMP's Miuro may have been doing the whole music-playing, rolling robot thing even before Sony's Rolly stole the spotlight, but it had the slight disadvantage of costing nearly $1,000. The company now looks to be changing that situation, however, with it teaming up with Sega Toys to release a slightly scaled-back but considerable cheaper version of the iPod dock, now dubbed the Music Robot ODO. Among other things, this one drops the built-in WiFi and camera of the Miuro, although it does hang onto the LCD that displays the ODO's "emotion" as it's dancing, and you do get a remote control to keep it from straying too far. No word on a release 'round these parts, naturally, but those in Japan can snag one for the not unreasonable cost of ¥15,540, or about $150. Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

OS X made to run on a Samsung Q1 Ultra Premium
Filed under: Handhelds With all the Psystar-related drama going on in the OSx86 scene this week, it's easy to overlook the fact that people are doing some pretty wild things with the community-led project -- we've already seen OS X boot on a Sony Vaio UX, and now the crew at jkOnTheRun have managed to shoehorn it on to a Samsung Q1 Ultra Premium UMPC. The Q1's 1.33GHz Core Solo and upgraded 2GB of RAM are enough to run Leopard smoothly, it seems -- Apple sold Mac Minis with similar specs a while back, after all -- and while not everything works exactly right, it appears the digitizer is recognized, allowing Ink to work. It's not perfect, as there are some calibration issues, but it's a fun little peek into what an OS X tablet might look like -- minus the command button, of course.Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Vote for Steve Jobs in the Time 100 ‘World’s Most Influential People’ Poll
Ok, everyone, put your fanboy caps on - it's time to vote. Steve Jobs is one of the people currently listed in Time Magazine's online poll for the Top 100 'World's Most Influential People'. There's just one problem - he's only got a rating of 25 right now, while guys like Bill Gates have a 47, and Steve Ballmer has a 39. STEVE BALLMER. Now, I don't know about you, but the idea that the guy that spearheads the company that leads in innovation across the world could come in ranked lower than Steve Ballmer…well…that makes me a little sick inside. This is the year of the iPhone we're talking about here - what other piece of tech was more influential than that this past year? So it's time to get out there and vote! Click here to vote for Steve, and be sure you read the rules. You're voting on a scale of 1 to 100 - and 1 is the worst, 100 is the best. OSx86 Project not too happy with Psystar either
Filed under: DesktopsUh-oh, it looks like wannabe Mac clone maker Psystar has more than one licensing issue with the Open Computer: the company didn't get permission from developers working on the OSx86 Project to sell their work. Netkas, who developed the EFI emulator Psystar is using, posted up a blog entry yesterday calling Psystar "liars" and has re-released his code under a license that specifically forbids commercial usage. We chatted briefly with Netkas and he told us that not only did Psystar take his code without permission, it's using other code from the project like the NVInject graphics patch developed by Gotoh, and that he contacted Psystar when he learned about the Open Computer with no results. We also talked to several other members of the OSx86 scene who believe that Apple is tolerant of (and even subtly assisting) their efforts, and are worried that the Psystar flap might end that relationship and bring the hammer down -- after all, there's no Psystar without OSx86.Interestingly, when we called Psystar to get comments on all of this, Rudy Pedraza, the president, first wanted to know if we could make Netkas call him, then denied using the EFI emulator, then repeatedly asked us for Netkas's phone number (in Russia!) so he could talk to him directly, and then finally promised to call us back. Yeah, he never called back. That's a lot of uncertainty around a pair of machines that haven't shipped from a company with two different addresses that's been in business for less than a year -- and Apple hasn't even gotten involved yet. At this point we're going to say that if you really want a hackintosh, you're likely better off rolling up your sleeves and building one yourself -- you'll probably have it done well before this whole mess gets sorted out. Nike+ SportBand gets reviewed
Filed under: Wearables For those breaking into a sweat trying to decide whether or not the Nike+ SportBand is really worth your hard earned dollars / euros / pounds / Schrutebucks, simmer on down. The runners over at the Stuff offices have snapped one up and tossed out their two pence. Summarized as a "Nike+iPod system without music," the unit was given fairly high marks all around. It was noted that calibration was highly recommended before taking on the London Marathon, but that setup was a real lesson in simplicity. Design wise, most everything was kosher save for the detachable face (Link USB drive) that may not fit perfectly in slim laptops sitting flush on a table and the non-backlit display that proved difficult to see at night. Believe it or not, critics still found the SportBand to be a joy to use despite the aforesaid quirks, but given the drawbacks, we'd certainly recommend trying out a pal's before throwing down for your own.Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

More bundle fun with MacUpdate Promo Parallels deal
Filed under: Software, DealsMust be software bundle season -- on the heels of the MacHeist bundle last week, the MacUpdate Parallels bundle is now on sale. MU is featuring the usual unlock scheme, whereby the top-line apps remain off the table until the requisite number of bundles have been sold. For this bundle, as you might have sussed out from the name, MU is headlining Parallels as the final unlockable app; other apps include Hazel, Art Text, Leap, Typinator, DVD Remaster Pro, and (still to be unlocked) Sound Studio and BannerZest. $64.99 for the lot of them (assuming the unlock thresholds are reached), less than the retail cost of Parallels alone -- not bad.As the value of a bundle decreases proportionally with the number of applications you already own, you might consider a bundle gift for the switcher in your life. Especially with Parallels in the mix, a new Mac user coming from Windows-land would probably be thrilled to get a whole pile of goodies.A heads-up for readers -- while MU has an affiliate-link program in place, please don't use our comments for linkfarming. Under The Radar News - Wednesday
More of a bad thing. When fissures in the housing and residential mortgage markets began to widen in early 2007, Merrill Lynch (MER) increased its dealings in complex debt securities in a misguided effort to make back its losses. More rules on Wall Street. Banking executives say they will welcome greater regulation in the $62T credit derivatives market, which were largely responsible for about $250B (so far) of losses and writedowns in the U.S. subprime breakdown. Currently, tracking of the over-the-counter trades is spotty at best. Then again, two years ago billion dollar trades were recorded on scraps of paper in a manner described by former Fed chairman Alan Greenspan as "appalling."

This is reasonably well explained in the "iCal Service administration guide for Version 10.5 Leopard" guide. Fix incorrect system names in Apple Remote Desktop
As a system admin, from time to time in Apple Remote Desktop (ARD), I find a system that is no longer showing the correct name (often the name shown is the IP address reversed ie: 31.0.0.10). This can prevent the system from being controlled or running reports for your task server. To correct this remotely, you'll need to use one of the following two solutions -- I prefer the first method, assuming you've enabled remote login (ssh).Method #1:Open Terminal and ssh to the system in question: ssh administrator@ip.of.target.system. Enter the admin password, and if prompted to accept the certificate, type YES then press Enter.Type cd /Library/Prefrences and press Enter.Type mv com.apple.ARDagent.plist com.apple.ARDagent.plist_bad and press Enter. You can buy ‘Juno’ in iTunes - but why would you?
That really is a question in the title there, and I'd love to get an answer from you if you think purchasing 'Juno' in iTunes is a good idea. Here's the story… The hit indy film 'Juno' was released on DVD and Blu-Ray yesterday. It is also available for purchase - not rent - in iTunes. It will cost you $14.99. You can buy 'Juno' in a variety of ways on a retail shelf (one might say too many ways). There is a single disk DVD of the movie for purchase at Wal-Mart and Amazon at a price of $15.99. So for $1 more than the iTunes copy you get the movie plus; Gag Take; Cast & Crew Jam; Screen Tests; “Inside Look: What Happens In Vegas”, Deleted Scenes, Director Commentary, Gag Reel, Writer Commentary. Or for $22.99 you can get a 2-Disc DVD of the film plus a digital copy of the movie for iTunes. For $27.99 you can get the film on Blu-Ray disk and STILL get the digital copy. It really seems clear in this situation that you're getting hammered in iTunes. $14.95? That's absurd when you can buy the movie on DVD (with special features) for only $1 more. When you factor in that the deluxe DVD and Blu-Ray versions of the movie include iTunes compatible files…it really is a puzzler on why you would ever buy the thing in iTunes in the first place. To me anyway. What do you think? Is there a reason you would buy 'Juno' in iTunes instead of on DVD or Blu-Ray?

A Love Affair With MacBook Air
I adore Apple's MacBook Air so much I'm starting to think I can live with its shortcomings. At 3 pounds and about as thick as a weekly magazine, this is the most endearing laptop I've ever used. But if you've read anything about this remarkably thin beauty, you know it achieved its fine figure because it lacks an optical disc drive, offers only one USB hub and, perhaps its biggest blemish, has a hard drive of only 80 gigabytes. Those are serious sacrifices, especially when you consider how we use computers and laptops today.

Minimize TMDA interference with iPhone dock extender
Getting tired of the GSM interference from iPhone any time it’s near a pair of speakers? Me too. It’s called “TMDA Interference” and it’s an unavoidable side effect of how GSM phones work. It doesn’t happen with CDMA phones (i.e. Verizon), but nearly all GSM phones including AT&T and T-Mobile are susceptible to it. TMDA Interference happens [...]
