For instance, if your .Mac account name is username, sending an email to username@me.com works the same as sending one to username@mac.com.Your mileage may vary -- as of 8:35 PM EDT on Saturday, June 28, 2008, it wasn't working for me. Turn that dead HD into something useful
Filed under: Hardware, HumorAs an entertaining Friday afternoon aside to our discussion earlier this week about how to recover data from a dying hard disk, it turns out there's plenty of uses left for the ones that have finally stopped pining for the fjords. With this tutorial from HacknMod, you can turn your hard disk into a grinder or sander. You can make a windchime and a keychain out of the parts inside the hard disk. Classy! You can turn it into a speaker. Years ago, my dad used to make clocks out of the huge 14-inch disk platters he used in old HP 3000 minicomputers. Turns out you can do this with the smaller drives of today, too. Finally, if you acquire enough expired hard disks, you can make a huge domino set out of them. Practical? Probably not. But hey, it beats throwing them away.Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

4iPhone hosted Exchange for iPhone
Filed under: Enterprise, iPhone4SmartPhone is getting ready to launch 4iPhone, a hosted Microsoft Exchange server for small businesses and individuals. It basically offers access to the Exchange based Enterprise features of the 3G iPhone including ActiveSync and DirectPush of email, contacts, etc. to users who don't have an Exchange server. 4SmartPhone already offers this for Symbian and Windows Mobile devices for $11-$16 a month and pre-registration for 4iPhone is available now, though prices have not been announced.Frankly, I suspect most individuals would be better off just using Apple's forthcoming MobileMe service. But for small businesses who want to equip their employees with iPhones, but don't want to incur the upfront expense of running an Exchange Server themselves, something like 4iPhone is probably worth a look.[via jkOnTheRun]Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Apple and China Mobile 3G iPhone talks on track
Filed under: Rumors, iPhoneBack at WWDC as Steve Jobs ran down the list of carrier agreements for the 3G iPhone one country in particular was conspicuous in its absence. Now Reuters is reporting that one of the biggest obstacles to bringing the iPhone to China has been overcome. A China Mobile spokeswoman told Reuters that "Apple is no longer insisting on a revenue-sharing policy, so the biggest hurdle for China Mobile to bring in the iPhone has been cleared, but there are practical issues still to be resolved."Apparently the shift towards carrier subsidies, as has happened even with original partner AT&T, facilitated this move as it has basically brought the iPhone into line with other smartphones. Even at WWDC Jobs was confident that the iPhone would arrive in China (and Russia) before the end of the year, and this latest announcement from China Mobile seems clearly to suggest that the iPhone will soon officially be set to conquer the world's largest mobile phone market, well beyond the gray market for the first iPhone.Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

80% of US businesses have Macs
Filed under: Apple Corporate, EnterpriseComputerworld is reporting on the results of a Yankee Group Research report that finds that 80% of US businesses now have Macs. This represents an huge increase from just two years ago when only 47% of businesses reported having Mac users. The Yankee Group estimates that corporate marketshare has risen to 8-10% overall with 21% of firms reporting more than 50 Mac users. Interestingly, and perhaps not surprisingly, 28% are running Windows in virtualization. While the consumer marketshare (and better yet, profitshare) numbers have looking up for some time now, it's good to see that Apple is finally starting to gain (or regain) a serious foothold in the corporate sphere as well. It's no surprise that as more users get acquainted with Apple gear at home that they're bringing pressure on corporate IT managers to implement Macs at work as well. Things just keep rolling for the bean counters in Cupertino.Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments
