iPhone 2.0 performance issues: Contacts
One of the consequences of new software is bloat. In its worst manifestation new features get added at the expense of core feature performance. A perfect example of this is iPhone 2.0 software, specifically the Contacts application. When I migrated from iPhone 2G to 3G I synchronized my data to the new phone and Contacts slowed [...]

iPhone 3G Sold Out Nationwide
I just went through Apple’s iPhone availability checker for all 50 states in the U.S.: one store in Hawaii has one model (8 GB), one store in California (out of 38 in the state) has one model (16 GB black), and the Fifth Avenue flagship store in New York has one model (16 GB white). That’s it. So much for my “just wait a week and then cruise in and pick one up in five minutes” plan. ★

Method devised for pwning first-gen iPhones running 2.0 via Windows
Filed under: Cellphones, Handhelds Feeling a little left out after yesterday's Mac-based Pwnage Tool festivities, Windows users? Fret not, because the ever-vigilant, ever-studious hacking community has managed to come up with a series of steps to get you back on your feet again with a fully pwned first-gen handset. The whole shebang isn't necessarily for the most casual jailbreakers -- let's just say it isn't quite as straightforward as the Mac procedure yet -- but it'll allegedly get you going if you're starting with an iPhone running 1.1.4 (there are additional steps if you jumped the gun on 2.0, you impatient son of a gun, you -- think of it as penance). As always, exercise extreme caution, understand that this could cause your iPhone to spontaneously combust into a useless pile of metal, plastic, and ash, and let us know how it goes in comments.[Thanks, Z-]Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Italian company plans RPG for the iPhone
Filed under: Analysis / Opinion, Gaming, Software, Developer, iPhone, App StoreSo the first generation of games and apps is in the iPhone's App Store, and as predicted, we've got more than our share of accelerometer races and the usual gaming standbys -- Tetris, poker, and even some nice tech demos like Andy Qua's Cube Runner. But now it's time to iterate and see if we can't start filling some of the promises a great would-be gaming platform like the iPhone offers. How about an in-depth RPG that uses the clock or camera, or a full-length platformer, or a social game that takes advantage of things like location awareness?Italian company KikiTechonlogy dropped us a note to say they're doing their part -- they're working on a full-length, console-style RPG for the iPhone called PanfobiA. Unfortunately, we hope the game's translation is better than their blog post -- they're working towards "performing not less than 100 hours in single player," and "Online Gameing Modality," which is supposed to be some type of online gameplay after the singleplayer experience. The pictures provide a little more hope -- they show a nice sense of art direction and some old-school style RPG characters. But even if PanfobiA is nothing but vaporware, they've got the right idea. For years, PDAs and mobile phones have had games, but they've all boiled down to poker, puzzles, and putrid junk. Now that the App Store is up and running, we can't wait for a developer to step up and provide a really deep and satisfying gaming experience on the platform.Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Apple Investors Were Pinned on Friday
On Friday I talked about Max Pain and Option Pinning. These are well known phenomena in the investment world and Friday these concepts were displayed in textbook fashion with Apple (AAPL). But it went beyond that. Apple investors are getting screwed by the will of big money and hedge funds. But I'm getting ahead of myself. For the novice investor or trader, they would have looked at Friday's action with naive objectivity and concluded that there's rampant manipulation. While this may be true, it's not for the reasons they might have concluded. For example, the market continues to advance on weakness in Oil and what appears to be capitulation by the Bears. This is great if you're pent up for a rally, right? Then why isn't Apple enjoying in the spoils?

This Week's Key Earnings Reports
This week is another busy earnings week. Below we highlight key companies expected to report from July 21st through the 25th. For each company, we provide the current earnings per share estimate and change in that estimate over the last month. We also provide each stock's historical beat rate based on earnings reports going back to 2001 as well as the average one-day change in reaction to earnings. Probably the biggest names reporting this week are Apple (AAPL), Caterpillar (CAT), Boeing (BA), Wachovia (WB) and AT&T (T). Apple kicks things off on Monday after the close. Historically, Apple has averaged a change of 1.61% on report days and beaten earnings estimates 85% of the time. Expectations are always high, so anything less than a beat for Apple will not be taken well.

YouTube Coming to TiVo, But Only for Under 750,000 Users
TiVo (TIVO) and YouTube (GOOG) announced a deal on Thursday that brings YouTube content available to TiVo Series 3 customers. While it's good to see TiVo add more content to its box, something I think it has been severely dragging its feet on, unfortunately it won't have any major impact for either company since it is only available for TiVo customers with a Series 3 box connected via broadband. While TiVo has sold over 5 million boxes about 4 million subscribers, only about 750,000 of those are on a Series 3. And out of those 750,000, how many are connected to a broadband connection and not just a phone line? I know of many friends who have a Series 3 but only connect to a phone jack as they don't have a TiVo WiFi adapter and their phone jack is near the TiVo and easy to plug into. (NewTeeVee has a video of the new service here.)

Mac Enterprise Security: Flawed in Fact, or Flawed Facts?
On Tuesday, Computerworld published a story about so-called security flaws in Mac OS X that affect the enterprise. The six arguments actually amount to a collection of shibboleths. Security Flaw #1: Apple Updates. The argument is that security updates pop up unannounced and insufficient information is provided to make a decision as to whether to roll out the update. Reality: Experienced IT administrators who maintain Macs have access to information that helps them better understand the updates.

Buy Apple into Earnings
The US bear market has affected dozens of companies, many in the financial sector. US consumers have seen their disposable income decreased substantially and they are unable to refinance their homes to get some needed relief as the mortgage market has tightened. Inflation with respect to energy has really hurt commuters as we have seen gas prices shoot through the roof, and they have had no other option but to trade in their SUVs and squeeze their two kids and family dog into a Prius. This doesn't mean short everything, but I am seeing a change in the market that is somewhat confusing. Citigroup (C) and Merrill Lynch (MER) came in with earnings and still had substantial write downs but not apocalyptic by any means. Microsoft (MSFT) and Google (GOOG) didn't do as well as many thought but that was on the heels of IBM (IBM) having another good quarter. The selloff in the Nasdaq Friday seems to be a little too much as I do not believe that things are as bad as many think.

The teardown analysis shows that Infineon (IFX) and TriQuint Semiconductor (TQNT) are the two biggest winners.

The Irrational Preoccupation with Apple's Guidance
Seriously now! What's with Wall Street's obvious narrow-mindedness when it comes to Apple's (AAPL) guidance? We all know that Apple guides conservatively every quarter, and every quarter we all know that Apple handedly beats its proffered estimates. Yet for some reason unbeknownst to anyone with at least a shred of intelligence, the media, Wall Street and the uninformed investor get completely caught up in the same old obtuse story: "Will Apple's conservative guidance disappoint investors?" To that I answer: only if the investor is an idiot. Wall Street is like a child who hasn't realized that touching a hot stove burns until after the fifth attempt at doing so.
