File under "Hmmm": Best Buy website down
Filed under: Portables, Rumors, Macbook ProMaybe this is a coincidence, coming as it does on the eve of a big Apple announcement... it could be meaningless, just regularly scheduled inventory maintenance, the BB version of the yellow sticky note. Sure, that's probably it -- nothing to see here. Yeah. No reason at all to think that Best Buy's website downtime could have anything, really, to do with the anticipated introduction of new Apple laptops tomorrow... right? As if our conspiracy generators weren't already in full gear: suppose it is related. Could Best Buy be getting an exclusive deal on the $900 laptop outside of Apple's own stores? [Note that many sites are now reporting the "$899 MacBook" may in fact be a Cinema Display.]Thanks to Horza for the tipRead|Permalink|Email this|Comments

The “Real” $899 MacBook is Actually a New Display?
New rumors keep cropping up about Apple's event tomorrow. First, some new pictures have surfaced on Engadget of a supposed new 15″ MacBook Pro. A few other sites have picked these up, but AppleInsider has taken it further with information about a possible new display that resemlbes an aluminum iMac but without the “chin”. They go on: A second source adds that the display is about 24-inches and features a “super thin” base stand. The new 24-inch display may be the mysteriously-priced $899 Apple product that recently turned up in Apple's systems, not a $899 MacBook. The $899 product is codenamed K29, while all other products on the price list begin with an “M” such as “M96.” Apple has traditionally used different codename trackers for its accessory products. For instance, several years ago, its Mac codenames began with a “Q” and its MightyMouse codename started with an “M.” OK, that's a new twist. So all the talk of a $900 MacBook may not be true, and instead we get a $900 display. That's the same price as Apple's current 23″ Cinema Display. You'd think after all these years Apple could have lowered the price when they introduced a new display. If not a lower price, then at least add some functionality. And why announce it now? They've waited so long, why use the event tomorrow for that purpose? I mean, what kind of functionality could be so special about this display that they would potentially announce it at a laptop event? Well, maybe… this? Admittedly, this would be very cool, but I think Apple's going to break a lot of hearts tomorrow (especially on Wall Street) if there's no sub-$1K MacBook.

MacBook pricing and part numbers?
Filed under: Retail, Other Events, Macbook Pro, MacBook, MacBook AirAccording to posts appearing on MacRumors and BoyGeniusReport tonight, Best Buy has been receiving new part numbers and pricing for unknown devices that are shipping to stores right now. MacRumors took the part numbers and price list and came up with the following assumption for what's going to be announced during tomorrow's notebook event: K29, MB382LL/A $899.00 - MacBook? M97, MB466LL/A $1,299.00 - MacBook M97, MB467LL/A $1,599.00 - MacBook M96, MB543LL/A $1,799.00 - MacBook Air M96, MB940LL/A $2,499.00 - MacBook Air M98, MB470LL/A $1,999.00 - 15" MacBook Pro M98, MB471LL/A $2,499.00 - 15" MacBook Pro M88, MB766LL/A $2,799.00 - 17" MacBook Pro While the entry-level MacBook isn't as inexpensive as some rumors had forecast, a Fortune / CNN analysis today noted that an $899 price point could expand Apple's notebook market by 50% in terms of revenue. What do you think about this pricing rumor? My personal feeling is that the numbers are valid, considering they're appearing this close to a major event. Leave your comments below.Read|Permalink|Email this|Comments

Could this be the new MacBook Pro?
Filed under: Rumors, Macbook ProTipster JR sent us this image of what appears to be a MacBook Pro with a glossy screen akin to the design of a newer Intel-based iMac. If accurate, this closely resembles an image that was posted and quickly removed from a Deutsche Telekom site last month. Images of the laptops were posted along with specifications very similar to existing MacBook Pros -- and it's still unclear what will be different about the notebooks under the hood. While unconfirmed, this could be the first image of the new MacBook Pro due to be released tomorrow at 10 a.m. Pacific time (1 p.m. Eastern). TUAW will be meta-liveblogging the event live, starting a little before the event is due to begin. Update: Commenter 'anon' took a peek at the geotags for the image and has come up with some interesting details... Take a look at the geotagging information for this picture. It's taken with an iPhone and was taken at 37.3231658936,-122.0148315430. A simple Google Map search shows this location is 1.6 miles from 1 Infinite Loop, Cupertino, CA. Anyone else have any insight into the relevance of this location? It appears it was taken on Stevens Creek Blvd, which there happens to be an Apple retail location but it's a few miles away. Thanks, JR!Read|Permalink|Email this|Comments

Mr. Blurrycam reveals the updated MacBook Pro, $899 laptop model shows up in Apple inventory systems
Filed under: Laptops Well, maybe -- we're not calling it official until Steve pulls the cloth off himself tomorrow morning . Still, there's no denying the similarities between this image and all those other case leaks we've seen, and the list of specs we've been given matches up as well -- that "metal and glass" enclosure now houses an NVIDIA GPU, but no FireWire 400, and video-out is apparently through a connector "more compact" than MicroDVI. We'll find out soon enough -- oh, and just to amp up expectations, Boy Genius says he's confirmed the existence of an $899 part number in Apple's retail systems. Counting down...Update: Our source just hit us with another pic, this time from the side -- it's after the break. We're also told that there's not one, but two NVIDIA GPUs inside -- we're guessing an integrated / discrete setup like in the VAIO Z, but we'll find out for sure tomorrow.Update 2: Our source just hit us again to say that it's two full-on NVIDIA GPUs -- sounds like a hybrid SLI setup to us, which is pretty wild. Wilder still, they say the MacBook and 17-inch MacBook Pro aren't getting refreshed tomorrow, which we find hard to believe, but we'll see when we see.Continue reading Mr. Blurrycam reveals the updated MacBook Pro, $899 laptop model shows up in Apple inventory systemsPermalink|Email this|Comments

Best Buy selling iPods in a vending machine
Filed under: Analysis / Opinion, Retail, Odds and ends, Apple, iPod touch, iPod classic I was in Anaheim, CA over the weekend (covering BlizzCon for our sister site WoW Insider) and while Macs were in short supply for most of the time, I did notice something Apple-related in LAX on my way out of the city yesterday. Best Buy recently started up a vending machine program which allows you to buy their electronics from staffless machines in various airports around the country, and lo and behold, right there next to the Nintendo DS games and spare USB hubs and mice, were Apple's very own iPods. Which makes sense -- Apple has long sold their stuff inside Best Buy stores, so why wouldn't Best Buy Express do the same?It was a little strange, though -- at first, I thought there was an iPhone in there, which just would have made the whole activation process even more confusing. But no, it's an iPod touch, in both memory sizes. I also wondered just what you'd do with an empty iPod on a trip, business or otherwise, but I guess people who would really buy their iPods from airports probably don't worry too much about when they'll find the time to get music on there. Not that it mattered much yesterday -- as you can see in one of the pictures, the console's IE version was bugging out, so no one was buying anything anyway (and I couldn't check prices). Still, very strange.Gallery: Best Buy Express selling iPods at LAXRead|Permalink|Email this|Comments

TAB Welcomes: Olly Farshi
Hello all, very pleased to be hopping aboard the TAB train and riding it all the way to Apple central. Being based over in Europe — London and Helsinki — I have the distinct pleasure of bringing you lots of Apple-related news from various awkward time-zones. My specialist subject areas are: iPhone and touch news and reviews, Apple How-to's, as well as games and audio software (though you'll find me chipping in with everything else too). Just to bring a little bit of joy to the gear-fetishists — my Apple set-up consists of a Macbook (soon to be brand new Macbook Pro), Mac mini, iPhone 3G, iPod touch and Airport Extreme. Not so over the top, I realise, but I'm constantly on the move so I tend to travel as light as possible. Other facts of note include: I make music (album out next year), I was incredibly disappointed with Spider-Man 3 yet derived much joy from The Dark Knight, I adore Stephen Fry's Apple-centric musings, I dig a good Belgian beer and I spend my Sundays curled-up in bed watching BBC re-runs. Comments, rants and impassioned discussion welcome on all of my posts here at TAB, and make sure to come follow me on Twitter and say howdy!

Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare
It's here. It took awhile, but it's here: Nearly eleven months after its lauded debut, Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare is on the Mac. The game is intense, immersive, fun and rewarding. From the moment I saw a trailer for Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare I couldn't wait to fire it up and play it. I loved the idea of taking a break from the period epics and diving into some modern battles with the latest weaponry and modern bad guys. Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare delivers in spades. So, I couldn't wait. I took my Christmas money from last year and bought an Xbox and Call of Duty 4. Heresy, I know, but in fact, at the time I had no idea that much later in the year Aspyr would be putting it on my computer as well. After a week of testing it on my Mac I can say the experience is excellent. I enjoy the higher resolution of having it on my 30″ monitor, and the controls, while a bit disorienting at first, are great. Installing the game couldn't be easier. Just a good old-fashioned “drag to your hard disk”. That's just what I did and it worked like a charm. Note: You do need the actual DVD mounted on your hard drive to run the game, unless you purchase the downloadable version. With Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare the experience is top notch. The graphics are just astonishing. Even if you've played a bunch of video games and think you might not be impressed when something good comes along, trust me, you'll be impressed. Whether it's sunlight catching on the dust particles in an abandoned building, or walking through the smoke from someone's smoke grenade, you'll feel like you're there. (more…)

TAB Welcomes: Matthew Bookspan
Hello everyone! I am one of the new writers here at The Apple Blog. The team here is great and they have been very welcoming. Most of my history with Apple dates back to the late 80's when I purchased my first Mac — an SE with 1MB of RAM and a 20MB hard disk — it was quite a machine for the time. I have had many Macs since then, including a IIci, one of the first PowerPCs — a PowerMac 6160av and a MacBook Core Duo (recently sold). Currently, the Bookspan household runs on many Apple products including a Penryn iMac 24″ 3.06Ghz (mine), an original MacBook Core Duo (wife's) an AppleTV (shared) and two iPhones — original (wife's) and 3G (mine). We also have a Time Capsule for WiFi and Time Machine backups. I have been writing on and off for a few years and enjoy authoring commentaries or reviews. I look forward to a fun engagement here on The Apple Blog. Please don't hesitate to write comments and/or send feedback my way!

TUAW Predicts! The October 14th notebook event
Filed under: Analysis / Opinion, Other Events, One More ThingWith the October 14th Apple Notebook Event just around the corner, the TUAW blogger squad decided it was time to look into our iCrystalBalls and make a SWAG predictions about what laptop goodness will be announced by the Cupertino Kids on Tuesday. To make this extra crunchy, we're not only posting our best guesses as to what will actually be announced, but what Steve J. will announce as "one more thing". Steve Sande Best Guess -- The entire MacBook line will be made of aluminum, and the 15" and 17" models will get slightly faster processors and more installed RAM. If that's the only announcement, expect Apple's stock to dive even further than it has during the recent stock market freefall. One More Thing -- The iTablet. Netbooks are selling like hotcakes, so Apple will get in on the action by coming out with a 9" tablet with a virtual keyboard and multi-touch support. Since it is all display and no keyboard, it will weigh less than two pounds. Think of an ber-iPhone. Victor Agreda, Jr. Best Guess -- Ditto what Steve said, except I think a drop in price will happen in light of tough economic times. Despite what some analysts may babble about, Apple is interested in the long game, and that means building more market share. To stay in the game they have to get more price competitive on the low end. One More Thing -- Again, I agree with Steve, although I wouldn't call this a tablet. More like a mini-Air with a decent keyboard (Apple has long been in favor of keeping decent-sized keyboards on smaller laptops) and touchscreen up top. I think the form factor will be something clever and surprising. If it appears at all, of course. Robert Palmer I think we'll see higher-end MacBook enclosures made of aluminum, and a sub-$1,000 model still made from white plastic. There's a part of me that says they won't ditch plastic altogether, because of the style factor: I bet there will be some people who still want a black MacBook. Hey, maybe there will be a black aluminum MacBook. Classy. One More Thing -- I'm still bearish on the iTablet. I think Apple has too much invested in the iPhone as a mobile platform to try and dilute it with another form factor with a different screen size. If it's a Mac, I'm not a fan of jury-rigging traditionally mouse-driven operating systems for styluses. Personally, I just don't think there will be "one more thing." He hasn't done that in a while, especially at "themed" events (like the music event last month). Michael Rose I'm also fairly well convinced that the $800 MacBook (dare we call it the MacBook Jr.?) is inbound on Tuesday, although I'm not sure that the manufacturing rumors are completely on target. The mutterings about a mystery port on the new MacBook -- and a dockability patent from years past -- are starting to sound credible too. One More Thing: I would love to see a BTO touchscreen option... and maybe a technology preview of an iTablet for delivery later in 2009. Mike Schramm New MacBooks are a given -- the Nvidia rumor sounds credible to me, not to mention that it's just what would push me to finally replace my old G4 Powerbook (though I'll miss my little 12" screen). "One more thing" seems like it's trending towards an AppleTV upgrade -- we've got HD content on the iTunes store, so it's time to have a set-top box that's fitting to play that content on. I'm hearing lots of Mac mini rumors as well, but I wonder if Apple will ever upgrade the mini -- it's small, it sells as-is, why break what's not broken? Of course, as Victor mentioned in an email, "Whatever happens, AAPL will drop 10% because iUnicorn wasn't announced..." Think we're out of our minds? Let's hear your prediction in the comment section!Permalink|Email this|Comments

Just Making Things Up

Grocery IQ: Grocery Shopping Just Got Easier
Grocery IQ by Free State Labs was recently Apple's App Store Pick of the Week, and for good reason. While there are other grocery list apps, and plenty of generic task list apps, that can help you remember to bring home milk and eggs, Grocery IQ has a unique method of helping you select from an internal database of over 130,000 items including brand names that you can find in US grocery stores. The program is smart enough to filter the list as you type, and it will take partial words (think “cheer honey” for Cheerios Honey Nut Cereal) to help you find items even faster. You can add items to your shopping list and Grocery IQ will present you with the appropriate “size” options. It knows my favorite ice cream comes in pint containers, and that the dog food comes in 20lb or 40lb bags so I can be specific when planning my purchases. Using the app while shopping is easy too. Grocery IQ includes the aisle information in its database to help you organize your circuit through the store. If an item is located somewhere else in your particular store, you can customize the aisle (and even the aisle names) to help you stay focused on your intended prey while you are traversing the linoleum-tiled halls of the store. When you finish, the app will save your items to its history. You can then use the history and the favorites to quickly build a shopping list for your next trip. (more…)

You can get full live coverage of the event on Gizmodo, Engadget and several other places. Here, however, we're going to have a live blogging app on the site from Cover It Live - and we're going to have an ongoing discussion of the event as it happens. I'll still post the important bits, but you can follow most of the coverage on other sites. While you're waiting for those sites to update - tab back over to here, and let's talk about what's going on. We'll have instant polls to judge reactions to what's happening at the event, and hopefully Cover It Live will be able to stay up while the event is happening. I actually think this will be much more fun than actually live blogging every second of the event. We're going to use Cover It Live instead of a chat client because of the advanced polling, moderation, and other features that I really like from the service.

Nine Large Caps with High Institutional Interest
Stocks of all sizes and shapes are trading up today, but which ones will continue to do well if the market holds up? In the graphic to the right (courtesy of Yahoo) I highlight nine large cap stocks that appear to be the biggest targets of institutional interest not just today, but when the markets moved up in spurts last week too. Those that made the cut did so on the basis of several price factors and several volume factors. The list consists of five technology names ([[MSFT]], [[AAPL]], [[RIMM]], [[ORCL]], and [[DELL]]), two mining/metals stocks ([[RIO]], [[FCX]]), and two energy stocks ([[PBR]] and [[CHK]]). Interestingly, two of the nine companies are based in Brazil.

iLife and iWork '09 announcements on 10/14?
Filed under: iLife, Rumors, Software, iWorkA TUAW tipster pointed us to a unsubstantiated, but intriguing post on Mac Soda noting that iLife and iWork '09 could be announced at the October 14th notebook event. The current versions of iLife and iWork were announced on August 7, 2007 at the same event where the aluminum iMacs debuted, and previous iLife/iWork introductions have also been touted as "one more thing" at hardware-oriented product announcements. The post doesn't provide any details of enhancements for the applications. In terms of speculating about what could change, iMovie could use some major enhancements to usability after last year's complete rewrite, and iWeb could benefit from better capabilities for publishing to non-MobileMe servers and iPhone-specific templates. The Numbers spreadsheet package could use a lot of new functionality, including macros, while Pages needs new templates.TUAW readers -- what would you like to see in an iLife or iWork update? OpenOffice 3 includes native version for Mac OS X
Filed under: Software, Open SourceOpenOffice has released version 3 of its eponymous open-source alternative to Microsoft Office, which includes a native version for Mac OS X. According to Insanely Great Mac, the software includes: ODF 1.2 Support Microsoft Office 2007 Import Filters Solver component which allows solving optimization problems Support for displaying custom error bars and regression equations Improved Crop Feature in Draw and Impress The software is only available for Macs with Intel processors. There are projects for converting OpenOffice for PowerPC, but an official version was not included in this 3.0.0 release. OpenOffice's site was running very slowly this morning due to overwhelming demand for the new software, but the official download link is here. There are mirrors available, and this one seemed to work for me. For Mac users, the file to download includes MacOSXIntel_AQUA_install in the name. The download is 163MB.Read|Permalink|Email this|Comments

Apple Developing Networked LCD HDTV/Apple TV Hybrid?
Perhaps tired of notebooks hogging the spotlight lately, Apple TV is the subject of new rumors that surfaced this past weekend. Valleywag's Jason Calacanis is making claims that Cupertino is developing a line of network-ready HDTV's with built-in Apple TV functionality. The TV's would offer the same feature-set as the current Apple TV peripheral, but would cut out the extra hardware, offering the ability to stream your content directly from any Mac or PC on your local network. Wal-Mart will be the next to carry the iPhone in store
It looks like Wal-Mart will be the next retailer to join in selling iPhones - and just in time for the holiday shopping season to kick into high gear. According to Boy Genius Report it looks like Radio Shack might have been in the running as well, but Wal-Mart could have possibly “swooped” in and stolen their spot. Wal-Mart is the largest seller of iPods in the world - so its no surprise that they would be getting the iPhone eventually. How they are going to handle the activation process remains to be seen. If the company is actually carrying the devices you can also expect them to increase the accessories they currently stock to feature more iPhone 3G related merchandise. The chain has been hesitant to carry too many items for the phone since they do not sell it. Still, a small number of accessories have been available since the launch of the original phone in 2007.

BGR: Walmart to carry iPhone 3G for Black Friday
Filed under: Retail, iPhone The Boy Genius Report claims that they received a report saying Walmart may become the second independent retailer in the U.S. to carry the iPhone. The big box retailer is expected to begin selling the iPhone about two weeks before Black Friday, on November 15. Walmart already carries a range of cases and accessories for iPhones, and sells a variety of iPods. Radio Shack was also rumored to carry the handset, but its unclear if negotiations stalled, or the news about Walmart is just stealing its thunder, as BGR speculates. Best Buy already carries the iPhone 3G, which you must activate before leaving the store. It stands to reason that Walmart will employ a similar process. OpenOffice 3.0 Released
The latest version of Open Office, released today, has been in development for the past three years. As one of the most popular open source competitors to Microsoft Office, the release has been anticipated for some time (the launch even warranted a party!). Open Office comprises of several applications: a word processor (Writer), spreadsheet (Calc), presentation package (Impress), drawing app (Draw), and database tools (Base). Some of the features heralded in the new release include: A new splash screen upon launch (see above) The ability to import Microsoft Office (.doc, .ppt, .xls) and Office 2007/Office 2008 for Mac (.docx, .xlsx, .pptx) files (though it still isn't possible to save to these formats) Support for sharing Excel workbooks Support for Excel sheets with up to 1024 columns A solver component for solving optimization problems Better polished crop and drawing tools The display of multiple Writer pages while editing Inclusion of Office commenting / change tracking in the document margin Some support for Visual Basic macros (a feature dropped by the Microsoft Office team) Enhanced support for PDF exporting, including password protection Support for Open Office extensions, allowing further features to be created by developers (similar to Firefox) No more reliance on X11 Open Office 3.0 is completely free to download and try out. If you are struggling with the Open Office site being overwhelmed with requests for the new software, it's worth trying this mirror. Installation is far simpler than in previous versions and you can be up and running in a few minutes. Let us know whether you'll be switching from Microsoft Office!

But few are talking education.

RunKeeper's new low price: free
Filed under: Software, Freeware, iPhone, App StoreIn early September, TUAW published an article about iPhone exercise-tracking apps that use the built-in GPS of the iPhone 3G to track walks, hikes, runs, and bike rides. One of the apps, RunKeeper, provided instantaneous feedback of speed through a bar chart display and had a $9.99 price point. Jason Jacobs of Fitness Keeper, the developers of RunKeeper, announced yesterday that the company is going to make the application available for free in the App Store (click opens iTunes). As noted in Jason's email, "Although we have been featured recently in TechCrunch and NY Times (and TUAW, of course!), and we have several thousand paying customers and a vibrant community, we are making a bold move and making the app free. We are doing so in order to forgo short-term revenues with the hope that our community will get to massive scale."Fitness Keeper definitely listens to user feedback -- our September post mentioned that RunKeeper didn't track total rise or elevation vs. speed, and now both of these items are available on the tracking Web site. Please note that Apple must approve Fitness Keeper's price change request before the new pricing goes into effect.Read|Permalink|Email this|Comments

Windows Mobile ported to iPhone, we think
Filed under: Cellphones Most of the Windows Mobile / iPhone cross-breeding we've seen has either involved elaborate WinMo skinning or terrible iPhone KIRFs, but we suppose it was just a matter of time before Microsoft's mobile OS was made to run on Apple's hardware -- or at least that's what it looks like here. Pretty much everything about this video is suspect, from the shadiness of the MyPhone2008 conference it was shot at to the interviewer's ridiculously inane questions ("You don't have girlfriends in Norway?"), but damn if that isn't WinMo happily booting on what appears to be an iPhone 3G -- we can't tell, but it's a good bet it's jailbroken. The developer, Erik Kristiansen, says that mod is in beta right now but that he's looking at a January release -- we'll see what more we can dig up before then. Video after the break.Update: As several commenters have pointed out, this has the trappings of a bad viral for the crappy SonicEmotion app also on that page -- all of the other videos are suspiciously fake / ridiculous, and the phone responds oddly to several touches. So much for that, we suppose.[Via MacToday.nl; thanks Daniel]Continue reading Windows Mobile ported to iPhone, we thinkRead|Permalink|Email this|Comments

Egnyte 2.0 adds iPhone support
Filed under: Productivity, Internet ToolsI mentioned Egnyte back in August, when they released version 1.5 of their secure storage, collaboration and backup solution. Today they've announced version 2.0 with support for iPhone access through a web application. I spoke briefly with Vineet Jain from Egnyte about the iPhone-compatible release. According to Vineet, the fact that 40% of Egnyte's users are on Macs was the impetus for the iPhone being the first device supported in their mobile development. The number of Mac users in their customer base surprised them a little, and so did the number of people using the service primarily as an offsite backup. Logically, they've concentrated their efforts based on user demand and improved the backup capabilities and performance as well. The iPhone interface, dubbed m Drive, allows users to log in to their accounts and work with their files. Access permissions can be set and changed on-the-go, and files can be shared by emailing them as attachments, or by emailing an access link to the file on the Egnyte server. Links to files can be set to expire at a given time and don't require an Egnyte login. m Drive also allows users to view previous versions and comments on files. The interface is simple, easy to navigate and not bad looking. It currently lacks the search features present in the full version. Such features may be present in a dedicated iPhone app, which is coming, I'm told. For t
