Axiotron tweaks Modbook for better, stronger, faster performance
Axiotron has the upgrade bug again, and it's making a litany of small, useful improvements to its Modbook that add up to a seriously improved machine. For starters, the rig now has a new hardware controller board for improved sleep, battery and system performance. Moreover, a fresh bonding process for the AnyView LCD panel and paper-emulating ForceGlass screen cover results in a "better contrast ratio, a firmer etched drawing surface, and decreased parallax between pen tip and cursor." Also of note, the updated beast incorporates the company's QuadCoat process, which protects the top shell with a liquid metallic coating and decreases the weight to 5.3-pounds. The Modbook starts at $2,249 by itself, or users can convert their non-aluminum Core 2 Duo-based Macbook into one starting at $1,299.Filed under: Laptops, Tablet PCsAxiotron tweaks Modbook for better, stronger, faster performance originally appeared on Engadget on Fri, 05 Dec 2008 02:40:00 EST. Meizu M8 gets stripped of its shell, dignity
See that Meizu M8 there? See that multitool-equipped hand? Yeah, you know damn well what's going to happen next, and we think the translated text expresses it best: "Well, the last one of the screws removed, MEIZU M8 has been completely broken up in a heap before us." The M8's guts make for some predictably boring pictures (unless you're really into circuitry), but the interesting bit might come in the accompanying narrative where we learn that the phone seems pretty dang solid -- good build quality, good materials, and name-brand components. That being said, they found it wasn't quite up to the iPhone 3G's standards for sheer manufacturing prowess -- but hey, they wouldn't want to take any cues from Apple, would they?[Thanks, Jeff]Filed under: Cellphones, HandheldsMeizu M8 gets stripped of its shell, dignity originally appeared on Engadget on Fri, 05 Dec 2008 01:32:00 EST. Stanza adds support for eReader to iPhone App
Earlier this week Lexcycle, makers of the popular Stanza iPhone ebook application, announced a partnership with Fictionwise, which could pose a serious threat to ebook rival eReader. Well, today, Lexcycle has announced that the Stanza reader will now support the DRM riddled eReader format as well. So if you prefer the Stanza reader over the eReader application you now have additional options for your book purchases. Don't forget, however, that Stanza also supports free and open book formats as well - and there are thousands of older works that are available for free to download. I highly recommend “A Princess of Mars” by Edgar Rice Burroughs.

“Children's Hospital” premieres in iTunes
BEWARE - An App Store rant could pop up in this post at any moment! The WB (you remember that network right?) has been resurrected as a really confusing website that runs lots of old WB Network TV, and a few new web based shows as well. One of those shows is from Rob Corddry, and it's called “Children's Hospital”. In it, “oversexed” doctors behave in “wildly inappropriate behavior” in front of “terminally ill pre-teens”. What an amazing premise for a series. It's supposed to be a send-up of the medical show genre, and the show's intent is to mock absurdness of the genre by going overboard in every way shape and form. The little bit that I've seen of it seem to do just that…and it wasn't in a good way, in my opinion. What really frustrates me about this, though, is to see something like this in the iTunes store, while knowing full well that PG and PG-13 content has been rejected from the App Store, with no reason or explanation. I've had this issue with several comics that we've submitted, and it boggles my mind how this is somehow acceptable, but monsters fighting one another is “obscene” and “pornographic”. Apple has an amazing double standard with the Music, Movie, TV, and Podcast sections of iTunes when it comes to the App Store - and I am continually shocked and amazed by what is rejected from the App Store - but completely acceptable in every other section of iTunes. It's interesting to see more internet based television find it's way into iTunes. I was a big fan of “Dr. Horrible's Sing-A-long Blog”, and I was glad to support it. This show, on the other hand, is not something I'm going to be getting behind. If you want to check it out - you can do so right here.

New firmware unlocks GPS on Verizon-branded Pearls and Curves, carrier's intentions unclear
If you've been itching to get your GPS on but weren't feelin' the $9.99 monthly charge for VZ Navigator, today is a good day. Verizon 8330 Curve and 8130 Pearl devices have finally been (somewhat) decrippled, as users over at HowardForums are reporting that the GPS in the aforementioned devices started working once they applied the 4.5.0.97 update. As this is an unreleased firmware version, we're unsure if this was an intentional measure, or simply an epic mistake. But one thing we're sure about is that if Verizon does shut this down in the next firmware update, the backlash will surely be enough to whip up one heck of a Storm. Unfortunately at this point, it's only working in BlackBerry Maps, while Google Maps is left out of the party; but hey, we'll take whatever we can get.[Image via Boy Genius Report, thanks Nate]Filed under: Cellphones, GPSNew firmware unlocks GPS on Verizon-branded Pearls and Curves, carrier's intentions unclear originally appeared on Engadget on Fri, 05 Dec 2008 00:31:00 EST. More names pull out of Macworld 2009
Hot on the heals of Adobe choosing not to have a booth at Macworld 2009, Apple Insider is reporting that several other big names are either scaling down, or pulling out all together. Companies like Belkin, Seagate, and Creative Labs have pulled out completely, while companies like Google and Marware are scaling back from previous years. With registration down by 20% over last year, it's not surprising to see that the show is going to be scaled by this year. This in no way means that the show is in danger of being cancelled, or falling apart, but it is a clear sign that the economy is having an affect on this year's event. With current travel expenses being what they are, and revenues down everywhere, we won't be attending the show to cover it live this year either, and I'm sure many people that intended to go a few months ago, might find that they're going to have to re-think that in January. Apple Insider speculates that this may not be economic only, but doesn't provide a clear answer to what else they think the issue might be. For me, I believe it is related to economic belt-tightening, and I won't be surprised if we see more of it before the show next month.

One of These Headlines Does Not Go With The Other
Below is a partial snapshot of MacDailyNews' home page as of 18:00 PT on December 4. These two AT&T headlines, one immediately after the other, struck me as kind of funny: Not sure if we should consider AT&T as “defying an economic slump” when it's laying off 12K of its workforce and reducing capital expenditures. I'm not criticizing MDN, the headlines actually link to two different sources (the former is Bloomberg; the latter is MarketWatch), so it's not a case of the same source contradicting itself. MDN is a news aggregator, so the juxtaposition of different headlines is common, but it's usually without such a seeming conflict. Shazam Expands Music Database by 30 Percent
Just the other day, I was using Shazam to tag music while watching a movie. Every time I use it, I'm still vaguely amazed, like I'm watching a mini-magic show. Well, now the magician has even more tricks up his sleeve thanks to a 30 percent increase in the size of its song database. I've yet to run into a hole in their current one, and now I'm even less likely to. The increase, which bumps the overall number of tracks Shazam has access to from six to eight million, follows the establishment of new partnerships and direct sourcing, and includes artists from Asia, Europe, and North America. It includes a number of hard-to-find and pre-release songs, which is what I find myself using it for most often, since those are the tunes I'm less likely to recognize on my own. Shazam now dominates the song recognition niche for mobile devices, although Midomi is still a strong competitor because of their support for humming, singing, and reciting lyrics. Both companies offer a lot to record labels and recording artists alike, and represent the future of direct marketing to consumers. It's in the interest of labels and music publishers to back these ventures as much as possible, since you can't buy music if you don't know what it is. There are a few things I'm still missing from this app, despite its obvious utility. I like the iTunes and YouTube integration, and the ability to share tags, but the lack of My Shazam integration, so that I can store and view my song Tags anywhere is a definite must. Apparently that's being worked on, but it can't come fast enough. Concentric Hosted IT Solutions and Web Hosting Click here to save cost on your IT demands

Flickr videos now iPhone compatible
Filed under: Multimedia, Portables, Internet, iPhone, iPod touchThe folks at Flickr have released some good news today. Specifically, their mobile site at m.flickr.com has been improved to include, among other things, video support for the iPhone and iPod touch. It seems to work by playing a Quicktime version of your clips, thus getting around the whole lack of flash support. The folks at Flickr note that the iPod touch and iPhone are the only mobile devices that can play the movies for now, but others will be added soon.Other improvements to m.flickr.com include the option to comment on photos and add them to your collection of favorites. I found the site to be very fast indeed over WiFi and no slouch over EDGE, either. Those of you with later model iPhones (and iPod touches) will have to tell me how your experiences have been. Thank you to Flickr and the Yahoo! Video Platform group. Woof! An iPhone-controlled dog treat dispenser
Filed under: Hardware, Peripherals, Hacks, Odds and ends, Internet, iPhone, iPod touchWhile you're geeking out with your techie friends building battle bots or pumpkin cannons, why not give your dog a little love at the same time?TUAW reader Stephen Myers sent us a link about a fun little project he worked on. He wants to be able to check on his dog's well-being and reward the dog with treats from anywhere he can use his iPhone. Stephen found out about ioBridge, a company that develops electronic monitoring and control modules that connect to any Ethernet network and can be controlled via an encrypted web front end.Myers used an I/O module and servo smart board from ioBridge, a servo, an old CD spindle case, some cardboard and wood scraps, a large syringe plunger, and a webcam to build his device, and then used the ioBridge web interface to create a widget that controlled the device. No programming was required. The system generated javascript that was then embedded into a web page optimized for the iPhone screen, and now Myers can check up on Cooper, his dog, and give Cooper some treats.Myers has many more details about the system in his blog entry, and he will be writing future posts about how he's using ioBridge and X10 controllers to turn lights on and off in his home -- from his iPhone.Be sure to check out the YouTube video below!TUAWWoof! Developers Get Promotional Codes to Give Free Copies of Apps
According to this MacRumors report, Apple has started to dispense promotional codes to App Store developers. With them, developers will now be able to grant free access to their app for up to 50 users. Previously, developers would have had to resort to the ad-hoc distribution method or iTunes gift cards to give promotional copies of their applications. While the 50 user limit might seem paltry compared to the ad-hoc's 100, the promotional code limit is reset with version updates. Additionally, and probably most welcoming to both developers and recipients alike, is no longer having to deal with the hassles of the mobile provisioning that the ad hoc method is reliant on. Via mobile provisioning, for promotional copies to be granted, developers would have to get the UDID of the touch device from each person receiving a copy and from there generate a .mobileprovision file to send with the actual application file that would bind that app to each specified device. Once both files were received, the end user would drag and drop them into iTunes to sync it. With the promo code method, all that is eschewed for a system that as easy as redeeming an iTunes gift card. In the future, we can see this opening the door for more than just a developer/reviewer relationship, and extended to contests and giveaways. With complexity removed and the fact that the codes are linked to a specific app, developers would be able to invite people to win copies of their app without relying on gift cards, which is a hockey method since there value of the gift-card may not match the price of the app thus costing the developer additional money and there's no guarantee that the recipient will actually use it to buy the app. Concentric Hosted IT Solutions and Web Hosting Click here to save cost on your IT demands

OpeniMac offers cut-rate, aesthetically challenged Apple clones direct from Argentina
After seeing how well Psystar did with its Open Computer, we think we'll just build our own Hackintosh rather than jump into this OpeniMac we've recently been hepped to. But who knows? Maybe you've been dying to send your hard earned money down to some shady Argentinean characters. In that case, this 2.53GHz machine should be right up your alley. Selling for $990 (or $1,330 with an LG 19-inch monitor), the base unit ships with 2GB memory, 320GB storage, and a 256MB ATI Radeon HD PRO. If you've got deep pockets, $1,710 will get you the OpeniMacPRO, a 3.0GHz machine with a 20-inch widescreen monitor and 4GB RAM. But seriously -- who knows where the money goes? And who knows whether you'll ever see the machine? Finish Your Holiday Shopping With Amazon Mobile for iPhone
Just in time for last minute Christmas shopping, Amazon.com has released their mobile app for the iPhone and iPod touch. It offers searching, Wish List and account access, and purchasing directly from the app. If you're already an impulsive internet shopper, then this may just be your worst nightmare. If you dread the mall and don't have time to spend hours finding the right gift at your computer, than it could be your new best friend. Amazon isn't just porting their website's functionality to the iPhone platform, either, although all of the central features of the site are there. They've wisely taken advantage of the iPhone's specific abilities to add a new feature called “Amazon Remembers,” which is similar to the standalone SnapTell Explorer app. It's kind of like Shazam but with pictures instead of sound. You take a picture with your iPhone's camera, and the images are instantly uploaded to Amazon.com's servers. Amazon tries to match products in its database to the ones taken by your camera, and then returns the results to the user to either purchase or save for later. iPod Touch users can join in the fun, too, since Amazon Remembers also allows you to use images stored in your device's photo album. Testing out the feature produced good results. A photo of the Iron Man DVD saved from Google Images returned the Two-Disc Special Collectors' Edition, as did a photo of the actual DVD from my collection. Oddly, results seemed to only be returned if I exited and reentered the app. It's a good beginning, and the Amazon Remembers feature is surprisingly accurate for an experimental first release. A colleague pointed out that the app lacks support for special deals, like Gold Box, Deal of the Day, and Lightnight Deals. Maybe those will come in future updates, or maybe Amazon doesn't want me to spend as much money as I possibly can at their site. Ball's in your court, Amazon. Amazon Mobile is a free download from the App Store. Concentric Hosted IT Solutions and Web Hosting Click here to save cost on your IT demands

Microscopic wheel will spin straight to your heart, literally
Sure, you've got an iPod Nano in your pocket and a VIA Nano in your custom PC, but we're willing to bet you don't have any nanomachines in your arteries at the moment. Two scientists from the Universities of Sheffield and Barcelona, Ramin Golestanian and Pietro Tierno, hope to change that by turning your bodily fluids into pathways for their tiny devices. The things are comprised of two beads, measuring 1 and 3 micrometers, attached to each other using strands of DNA. A magnetic field gets 'em spinning in the right direction and the increased surface area of the larger bead moves the contraption forward at a blistering 1 micrometer per second (shown in a short but sweet video below). Now, if the good doctors could just build 11 of these things and get them in a 4-3-3 formation we'd finally know where to place our money for next year's nanosoccer RoboCup Open.[Via Scotsman.com]Continue reading Microscopic wheel will spin straight to your heart, literallyFiled under: RobotsMicroscopic wheel will spin straight to your heart, literally originally appeared on Engadget on Thu, 04 Dec 2008 15:28:00 EST. iPhone triples market share as of Q3 2008
Filed under: Analysis / Opinion, iPhoneApple saw the iPhone's market share triple over the past year, capturing 12.9 percent of the worldwide smartphone market, according to a new Gartner analysis. For the quarter ending September 30, iPhones accounted for 3.4 percent of the market in 2007. That figure was more than 3x higher on the same day in 2008. Nokia is the leader worldwide in smartphone sales, with 42.4 percent of the market. BlackBerry maker Research in Motion comes in second with 15.9 percent. In North America, Apple is in second place behind RIM, with iPhones accounting for over a quarter of all smartphones. Easy Wi-Fi for iPhone simplifies logging onto free AT&T wifi
Filed under: Internet Tools, iPhoneDevicescape has released Easy Wi-Fi for AT&T (iTunes link) a new iPhone application designed to streamline logging onto the now free AT&T wifi hotspots. The old way required you to join the network, which would then bring up a page in mobile Safari to enter your AT&T phone number. A few seconds later you receive a (free) text message from AT&T containing a link. Click on the link and you're connected to the internet. With Easy Wi-Fi apparently all you have to do is launch the app and it will log you on without going through the text message rigmarole. They're offering it for free at the moment, though apparently it'll be jumping up to $1.99 on Friday. So if you make a habit of visiting places with AT&T wifi (e.g. Starbucks) grab it now at the iTunes Store.[via Gizmodo]TUAWEasy Wi-Fi for iPhone simplifies logging onto free AT&T wifi originally appeared on The Unofficial Apple Weblog (TUAW) on Thu, 04 Dec 2008 14:11:00 EST. Gartner: iPhone OS Moves Past Windows Mobile in Worldwide Market Share
MacDailyNews has numbers from Gartner on worldwide smart phone market share. The OS numbers are interesting: Symbian at 63%, RIM at 16%, iPhone OS at 13%, and Windows Mobile at 11%. But it’s the year-over-year growth where you can see who has actual momentum: Symbian is down 12% and Windows Mobile is down 3%; RIM is up 82% and iPhone OS is up a staggering 328%. It’s a good time to recall Steve Ballmer’s prediction regarding the iPhone’s prospects back in April 2007. ★

SanDisk Cruzer Enterprise: first secure USB drive fully compatible with OS X
Listen up, paranoid readers. SanDisk has just introduced what it's calling "the first secure USB flash drive to fully support Apple Mac OS X computers." The new Cruzer Enterprise was designed to meet unique USB security / compliance needs by implementing a "hardware-based 256-bit AES USB encryption solution that puts mandatory access control on all files as protection against theft or loss of the drive." Of course, Windows environments are also supported, and on both platforms users can log in / shut down access to the encrypted storage area, change and manage passwords, alter contact information (among other preferences), launch online support (woo!) and view current firmware and drive information. The drive is available in 1/2/4/8GB flavors (runs around $60 to $300) and plays nice with both OS X 10.4 (Tiger) and 10.5 (Leopard) on the Mac side.Filed under: StorageSanDisk Cruzer Enterprise: first secure USB drive fully compatible with OS X originally appeared on Engadget on Thu, 04 Dec 2008 13:15:00 EST. Piper Sees '09 E-Commerce Down Due to Increased Saving
While I noted earlier his reduced estimates for both Apple (AAPL) and Google (GOOG), Piper Jaffray's Gene Munster Thursday actually cut estimates on 33 Internet and online content companies, citing “the significant deterioration in the economic and consumer spending outlook.” Munster says he expects the U.S. savings rate to increase significantly over the next few years, following 25 years of increasing leverage and a declining savings rate. The good news is that will allow households to rebuild savings, home equity and investment portfolios. The bad news is that it means less consumer spending.

Patent Roundup: 'Hover' touch surfaces, liquid-cooled laptops
Filed under: Hardware, Odds and ends, AppleTwo Apple patent filings have piqued interest this week: One for a touch surface that detects where your finger is hovered above it, and another for a liquid-cooled laptop. The hover surface works by measuring light reflected off your finger at various wavelengths to figure out where it is over the surface. Apple uses a basic proximity sensor in the iPhone (so it knows when it's up against your ear), but this new technique would allow more precise recognition of objects hovered above a touch-sensitive surface. Unlike a graphics tablet, which requires a stylus, your finger or hand is likely the intended tool for this surface, as evidenced by the drawings. Second, the liquid-cooled laptop, as with similarly-cooled Power Mac G5s from a few years ago, is designed to improve performance by reducing the temperature of the components of the computer. The patent describes wrapping a small heat pipe around various components in the computer that contains a liquid coolant. Liquid-cooled G5s, though, were prone to leaks, which led to heavy damage and dismay for users of the systems. Apple entirely replaced many of the systems that leaked, rather than trying to repair them. BGR: Walmart to sell $99 iPhone?
Filed under: Retail, Rumors, iPhoneYour source for all iPhone-slash-Walmart news, BoyGeniusReport, has a whopper for you: Walmart might offer the 4GB iPhone for $99 when they start selling the handsets after Christmas. Even they're skeptical, though: Their tipster isn't one of their regulars, and so they can't say with any certainty that it will come to pass. The discount makes sense, in a way. Selling the low-end iPhone at a ridiculous price will turn it into the new Motorola RAZR. Apple would love everyone in the country to own one, I'm sure. It's not clear who will eat the discount, though -- Apple, AT&T, or Walmart -- but my guess is that it's mostly Apple. Apple has other revenue streams for the iPhone, such as the App Store and iTunes, and AT&T still has its spendy two-year contract. If this is what Apple needs to do to make this the ubiquitous handset to have, then it may be worth the cost to them. On the other hand, as many commenters at BGR have pointed out, with ubiquity comes rejection. Suddenly, the iPhone isn't the cool status symbol to have anymore. This doesn't bother me one bit, but to some people -- for whatever reason -- it's important to them. (I have special names for those people.) Nevertheless -- will it impact sales? How much is the "hip" coefficient driving purchases? In any event, consider this one of those situations where the Internet is writing checks that Walmart's butt might not be able to cash. But pretty sweet if it does.TUAWBGR: Walmart to sell $99 iPhone? originally appeared on The Unofficial Apple Weblog (TUAW) on Thu, 04 Dec 2008 12:04:00 EST. Apple In-Ear Headphones hands-on, ears-on, and impressions
We've been wanting to get some extended face time with Apple's In-Ear Headphones (yes, that's the product name) ever since we spied them at the company's Fall "Let's Rock" event. Of course, they didn't exactly hit the scene on time, and we were starting to get suspicious. Tack on the rumor they wouldn't be compatible with iPhones, and we felt downright indignant. Imagine our surprise, then, at the discovery that they not only sound really, really good (warm lows and crisp highs, a distinct lack of that modern, pushy mid-range), but they do work with the iPhone (the 3G we've got here, at least). Regular playback is a charm, and we had no problem making and receiving calls with the buds and attached mic -- though strangely the remote doesn't seem operable on the phone, thus deflating our excitement ever-so-slightly. Regardless, the sound quality is pretty boss for the price (besting other, more expensive models we've checked out), and they're a huge step up from Apple's previous offerings. Check out some looks at the beauties in the gallery below.Gallery: Apple In-Ear Headphones hands-on, ears-on, and impressionsFiled under: Portable AudioApple In-Ear Headphones hands-on, ears-on, and impressions originally appeared on Engadget on Thu, 04 Dec 2008 11:48:00 EST. Netflix now official for Mac, on Boxee as well
Netflix's “Watch Instantly” feature is starting to pop up on just about everything. It is now officially available for Mac (but you will need to install the Microsoft Silverlight plugin if you haven't already), and it has been added to the media center craze of the moment “Boxee” as well. AppleTV users are most excited for “Boxee” because you can hack your AppleTV and install it on the device. This would now give you the Netflix “Watch Instantly” feature on your AppleTV for the first time. What's interesting about all the excitement about this is that people never seem to mention (or rarely seem to mention, rather) that the selection of movies on this service is pretty terrible. There are quite a few TV shows that you can watch with it, however — and perhaps that's enough for people, but I think Netflix needs to concentrate on improving the quality of their stream, and the content that they have - before this begins to live up to the hype that currently surrounds it. What do you think?

RUMOR: Wal-mart to sell a 4GB iPhone? Genius.
A 4GB iPhone 3G being sold at Wal-mart is either A) a genius idea by Apple that will happen soon, or B) (and more likely) a genius of an idea by someone with too much time on their hands that is trying to make news during a slow time of year. Frankly, I hope its real, because I think it's a great idea. The 4GB iPhone was discontinued early in its life cycle because people were upgrading to 8GB for only $100 more. Now we're talking about doubling the price of the device to move up to that 8GB option - and it seems like much more of a bargain to go for the 4GB. We're also talking about a wider audience with the phone priced at $99. The Wal-mart target audience is all about the low price point - and a $99 iPhone would be a great way to get it into even more hands during these tough economic times. It's also as close as I think we'll ever get to an “iPhone nano” that people like to talk about. There is very little chance, in my opinion, that Apple will ever release a scaled down version of the iPhone feature wise - but size is another issue entirely. It makes sense, and I think it would be a good move for the company. Having said that — every one of these Wal-mart rumors thus far have turned out to be false. So don't hold your breath just yet.

Could There Be an iPod Shortage for Christmas?
Now now. There's no need to panic. And we certainly don't want any shopping mall stampedes. But, just between us, word is that there may be a shortage of iPods this holiday season - not that anyone out there is trying to fuel a buying frenzy to ensure that little Billy and Sally have one to unwrap this year. Kaufman Bros. analyst Shaw Wu said in a research note that his retail sources are reporting stronger that expected demand, according to a report in CNET. Apple (AAPL), like so many others, were unsure about what to expect this holiday season, given the economic conditions and widespread stories about stock market losses and layoffs. But Wu, apparently, thinks that the iPod could be positioned to withstand some of the doom-and-gloom, seeing how the iPod benefits from “strong consumer understanding of the value it provides.”

Boxee releases new alpha, adds Netflix support
Filed under: Multimedia, Software, Video, Mac mini, Apple TV It's a pretty awesome day to be a Netflix fan. Not only is the Watch Instantly service officially available for OS X, it's also now working via boxee, my favorite media center application!Boxee pushed out an impromptu update last week for Apple TV owners, specifically to address issues with the 2.3 firmware update. Today's update is targeted at all boxee versions and adds a host of new features, including the big dog: Netflix support for US customers. Note: Netflix support is currently only in the Mac version of boxee. The boxee team is working hard to bring it to the Apple TV, but they need to work around some of the hardware limitations. They'll be posting updates on the boxee blog on their progress. Here's the rundown: Netflix support for Mac users Improved Hulu performance and a new Hulu interface, including access to your personal Hulu queues Access to TheWB.com (US only unless you use a proxy) The Boston Globe's Big Picture blog - amazing photos from around the world MTVMusic - songs/artists in your collection are now linked with music videos New YouTube interface, improved performance and .h264 support Custom interfaces and improved playback for CNN, Flickr and Picasa All in all, this is a pretty stellar update. When I talked to the team from boxee last week, they made it clear that Neflix was the #1 priority. That they got Netflx running in boxee in under two weeks is nothing short of amazing. Yes, I do wish that support would be extended to Apple TV users, but I can be patient. If you haven't tried boxee, you can go to http://boxee.tv/tuaw and get an invite. You'll need an Intel Mac running OS X 10.4 or OS X 10.5 or an Apple TV. Boxee is also available for Ubuntu 7.10 and 8.04, though I'm unsure if the team was able to implement Netflix support for Ubuntu yet.Give it a shot and tell us what you think in the comments! Boxee Adds Netflix Support
Today, boxee is releasing their latest alpha build for the flexible media player. The big news for this release is the tantalizing Netflix support and new custom interfaces for various channels like Hulu, CNN, Flickr, Picasa, and YouTube. There are a few new content sources as well. Netflix takes center stage for this release at the request of users. The boxee team ran a survey just two weeks ago and the results put Netflix out in front as the most requested new addition to the media center app. The initial implementation for the desktop seems to be pretty complete even at this early stage. You can browse content available in Netflix's “Watch Instantly” category, add items to your Instant Queue, and play the streaming content. Here's a couple shots to tide you over until you can download and install for yourself. (more…) Concentric Hosted IT Solutions and Web Hosting Click here to save cost on your IT demands

Apple suspects Psystar is part of a Larger Conspiracy
Groklaw has taken a closer look at the amended Apple lawsuit against Psystar, and things are getting very, very interesting in this case. Not only does Apple assert that Psystar has violated the DMCA, it goes further to accuse the company of pushing buyers to commit copyright infringement (and also violate the DMCA) by using the machines themselves. Apple even goes so far as to state that the company believes that ten unknown people or companies have contributed to the violations by Psystar in some capacity. “On information and belief, persons other than Psystar are involved in Psystar’s unlawful and improper activities described in this Amended Complaint,” the new section reads. “The true names or capacities, whether individual, corporate, or otherwise, of these persons are unknown to Apple. Apple will seek leave to amend this complaint to show the unknown John Doe Defendants’ true names and capacities when they are ascertained.” So the question now is just who does Apple suspect is a part of this larger conspiracy?

Control how iTunes 8 handles playback in Grid view
There is a new feature in iTunes 8 grid view that allows you to determine whether music in a given playlist or library will continue to play after the selected artist (or album, genre, composer, or selection) is finished. In grid view, you can play an Album (assuming Grid view is set to Albums) by clicking the Play Album button that appears when you mouse over an album cover. Now, by default, when the chosen album is finished playing, iTunes will stop. But what if you want iTunes to continue playing the other albums in your playlist/library? Then instead of clicking Play Album, hold down the Option key first. When you do, the Play Album button changes to read just Play. Option-click on Play, and once your album is finished, iTunes will go to the next album in your playlist/library. This is also handy if you want to shuffle between albums in Grid view. If you have shuffle enabled and click Play Album, iTunes will just shuffle and play songs from that album. If you O...

Create a text clipping containing the '@' character
I needed to create a text clipping that contained the "@" character, but couldn't, because MacOS creates dragged text containing an "@" character as an email link. See for yourself: Select the following text -- xxxx+yyyy -- then drag it to your Desktop. This creates a text clipping file named xxxx+yyyy.textClipping. Now select the following text -- xxxx@yyyy -- and drag it to your Desktop, and notice that the file is named xxxx@yyyy.mailloc, and its icon says MAILTO. If you drag and drop this text into a program, it will get pasted as mailto:xxxx@yyyy.mailloc. The solution requires editing the xxxx+yyyy.textClipping clipping file. Livestation iPhone app promises live TV over wifi
Filed under: Analysis / Opinion, Multimedia, Odds and ends, Internet, Developer We'll believe it when we see it, of course. Livestation is a service that claims to be "Slingbox without the box." Once subscribed, you can watch television streamed to your computer, via peer-to-peer, from anywhere. And now they're apparently set to announce an iPhone app that will do the same thing. Like we said, it seems like a great idea -- who wouldn't want to watch some TV while waiting for the train or sitting the doctor's office -- but investment money and promises do not a working iPhone app make.Even the Livestation rep says it's still in development right now, and he won't give a date other than "soon." I have no doubt that we'll soon see streaming TV on the iPhone -- with the growing popularity of sites like Hulu and Netflix's own streaming video service, and a similar promise of streaming shows from i.TV, it definitely seems like that's where media is headed, even portable media. But this isn't something to hold your breath for quite yet -- I'm happy with Weatherbug's already-working video weather reports.TUAWLivestation iPhone app promises live TV over wifi originally appeared on The Unofficial Apple Weblog (TUAW) on Thu, 04 Dec 2008 10:30:00 EST. Options Trader: Thursday Outlook
Yesterday was perfect! We got our test of 8,200, which held, then we broke through 8,400, tested it, held a higher low and then went through it to make our goal at 8,600. Of course, these are moves that used to take a week. but we're getting used to the violent, intra-day nature in the market. In fact, at 1:19PM, with the Dow at 8,464, I was able to lay out the moves for the rest of the day, saying: "Lots of fear ahead of the BBook - that's probably good because if we were up at 8,600 I'd be looking to short for sure. We could get a very sharp spike down followed by a rally or just a massive sell-off but let's say 8,280 is the point I want to hold based on the last 2 days' movement. Overall, I'd say I still favor a rally but not enough to put a big bet on it - just be ready to enjoy the ride…" You can see on the Dow chart, what a wild ride it was, hitting 8,280 on the button at 2:07 and rocketing back to 8,600 at the close - still the predictable roller coaster.

As part of a legal rebuttal to a prior complaint and lawsuit by iPhone customer William Gillis over iPhone 3G issues and possible false advertising based on the “twice as fast for half the price” claim, Apple has stated that “no reasonable person” should have actually believed the slogan. “Plaintiff's claims, and those of the purported class, are barred by the fact that the alleged deceptive statements were such…

AT&T cutting 12,000 jobs due to "economic pressures"
AT&T may have about the best selection of choice handsets (smart or otherwise) available in the States right now, and continued iPhone exclusivity has definitely brought a windfall of new subscribers to its wireless division, but Ma Bell wasn't built on cell towers alone. There's still an extensive landline division to support, and it seems the company is leveraging the current economic doldrums to make it a little less so, joining the layoff crowd for the second time this year by shedding a further 12,000 workers (about 4 percent of its workforce), most said to be coming from passé, non-wireless sectors. So, happy holidays, folks -- hope those severance packages get you through the winter. Is Jon Hicks already singing?
For years, I have made no secret of my shameful passion for Opera, the little-loved, under-appreciated star of the browsing world. For years also, I have bemoaned Opera's lack of interest in anything design-related. True to form, the Opera engineers were releasing a great product, digging its grave slightly deeper with every release, omitting to update buttons here, botching themes...

Netflix Streaming officially comes to the Mac
Filed under: Multimedia, Video, Internet, Internet Tools Update: As the commenters have noted -- this service is currently only available for US customers. I truly apologize for my US-centric slant.Last month, Netflix finally started to roll out its Watch Instantly service to Mac users. You needed to opt-in to use the feature, but it was available for those who wanted to access it. Today, Watch Instantly is available for Mac users without having to opt-in -- as long as you meet the minimum system requirements (Intel Mac running OS X 10.4.8 or higher, and at least one GB of RAM).Watch Instantly is a great way to catch up on a movie, TV show or documentary without having to wait for the movie to come in the mail. You don't get the extra features or super surround sound, but it's fast, the quality is good and it is free to use. If you have a Netflix Unlimited plan, you can watch as many movies a month as you want. If you have a limited plan, the number of films you can stream is also limited. You can access Watch Instantly from the tab on the main Netflix page and browse through the selection of movies and TV shows. You still need to install the Microsoft Silverlight plugin, if you don't already have it installed. Watch Instantly works in Firefox 2 or higher and Safari 3 and up. Thanks to everyone who sent this in!TUAWNetflix Streaming officially comes to the Mac originally appeared on The Unofficial Apple Weblog (TUAW) on Thu, 04 Dec 2008 10:00:00 EST. Apple, Walmart to do $99 4GB iPhone?
Look, we know you've been holding out for the iPhone to hit Walmart before you pick it up, sandwiched between the fishing gear and row upon row of exercise videos -- and we don't blame you. You'll ride your shopping cart down the wide aisles like a chariot, and when you get home with the phone you'll dial up all your friends and let them know how much cheaper your iPhone was than theirs. What was that? Yeah, the new word on the street is that Walmart is getting a 4GB iPhone 3G for a mere $99, according to Boy Genius Report, and while BGR was previously reporting a November 15th launch date at Walmart, and can't vouch for the accuracy of this new report, Walmart training materials (pictured above) have been seen in the wild, so there's a grain of truth to this madness somewhere. Plus, a $99 iPhone just sounds so Walmart-ey, doesn't it?[Via Mac Rumors]Filed under: Cellphones, HandheldsApple, Walmart to do $99 4GB iPhone? originally appeared on Engadget on Thu, 04 Dec 2008 09:22:00 EST. Smartphone numbers are in: iPhone sales exceed Windows Mobile sales for first time
Gartner's latest and greatest analysis of the global smartphone industry is in, and there are quite a few interesting nuggets tucked within all those percentages. For starters, the sector still managed to grow 11.5% in Q3 2008 compared to a year prior, but that increase is the smallest since it began tracking. Of course, given the current economic climate, we'd say it's a win to see any number not in the negative. Moving on, we see Nokia maintaining its numero uno status with 42.4% market share, though it did recognize a rare decline in sales of 3% year-on-year; as for RIM, its BlackBerry phone sales increased an amazing 81.7% in Q3. We're also clued in to why Apple was rumored to be hacking its iPhone production some 40% in Q4, as the company has some two million units of inventory built up in the supply channel. Finally, we're told that "for the first time, iPhone sales exceeded sales of Microsoft Windows Mobile devices worldwide and in North America," and beyond that, "open-source initiatives like Android and Symbian Foundation [are set to] challenge Windows Mobile's licensing model in the short-term." Need we really reiterate how badly WinMo 7 is needed?Filed under: CellphonesSmartphone numbers are in: iPhone sales exceed Windows Mobile sales for first time originally appeared on Engadget on Thu, 04 Dec 2008 09:01:00 EST. Brothers in Arms: Hour of Heroes impresses as an iPhone shooter
Filed under: Analysis / Opinion, Gaming, Odds and ends, Software Update, iPhone, App Store, iPod touchHere we go -- Doom on the jailbreak aside, the iPhone hasn't really had a nice example of shooter gameplay, though Brothers in Arms: Hour of Heroes (iTunes link) seems like it might be the breakout. It's made by Gameloft, who've been making mobile games for a while now, but the good news is that it doesn't look like a mobile game at all. The graphics are 3D and vibrant, and the sounds are very impressive. The control scheme is interesting -- it's more of a third person shooter, as you use the lower left wheel to move your character, and you can use the touchscreen to move the aiming reticule (seems like there's a little autoaim help in there as well). There are even cutscenes, multiple weapons to choose from, vehicles to drive, and a cover system (though there kind of has to be, with aiming that slow in places).Still, very impressive for an iPhone game, and a very good bar-setter for the first major shooter we've seen on the platform. As you might expect, this isn't going to be cheap -- it's $9.99 in the App Store, and while this would be the perfect title for a demo (how else do you expect to sell a $10 app?), there's not one to be found at all. Still, if there's going to be such a thing as a premium game on the iPhone, this is probably it. For all of the colorful little puzzle and wordplay games on the iPhone, sometimes you just want to shoot some Nazis.TUAWBrothers in Arms: Hour of Heroes impresses as an iPhone shooter originally appeared on The Unofficial Apple Weblog (TUAW) on Thu, 04 Dec 2008 09:00:00 EST. Analysis: iTunes holds 12.6% of the US music market
Filed under: Analysis / Opinion, iPod Family, Apple Financial, iTunes, iPod touch Stick with us here: a new report by Forrester Research claims that of all the music purchased in the US, digital purchases have jumped to 18% of the total, and they expect it to go up to 41% of total sales over the next five years. That means that about 20% of all the music sold in the US is bought digitally. And distorted-loop.com is doing a little reasoning from those numbers -- since Apple's iTunes accounts for 70% of US digital sales, DL has decided that Apple accounts for 12.6% of all music sold in the US.Can't really argue with that reasoning, and given that we know iPod sales are up (and increased sales of the iPod touch means more people can buy from iTunes straight to their iPods, not to mention that one of the biggest days for iTunes sales is Christmas, thanks to all the new iPods under the tree), we can probably look for that number to head even further north next year.TUAWAnalysis: iTunes holds 12.6% of the US music market originally appeared on The Unofficial Apple Weblog (TUAW) on Thu, 04 Dec 2008 08:00:00 EST. Apple's iPod Problem
Chris Wysopal is the head of a four-iPod family. His wife and two kids all carry the pint-size nano music player from Apple, while he uses a 2003-vintage device he got as a hand-me-down from his wife. But as much they love their iPods, the Wysopal family has no plans to buy any new ones in the foreseeable future. "They're all working, so there's no need to buy more," says Chris. Strange as it may sound, Apple may have an iPod problem. The iconic music player cemented the company's reputation for innovation and fueled its financial success in recent years. But those days appear to be over.

Apple: Psystar clones part of a larger conspiracy
Filed under: Apple Corporate, HardwareEarlier this year, manufacturer Psystar began selling computers capable of running Mac OS X Leopard. They've gotten the Mac community's attention, and Apple's. Of course, Psystar found themselves involved with Apple legal shortly after their announcement. That was no surprise, but this week's news kind of is.Apple is claiming that Psystar is part of a larger group of individuals or corporations. Here's a quote from the recently amended claim:"...persons other than Psystar are involved in Psystar's unlawful and improper activities described in this Amended Complaint. The true names or capacities, whether individual, corporate, or otherwise, of these persons are unknown to Apple. Consequently they are referred to herein as ... the "John Doe Defendants"...Apple will seek leave to amend this complaint to show the unknown John Doe Defendants' true names and capacities when they are ascertained."Yikes. What does make sense in light of this accusation, if proven to be true, is Psystar's apparent brashness. When faced with an opponent as high-profile and well-funded as Apple, they've continued to sell machines. Either they're crazy or they've got some serious backbone. We shall see.[Via World Of Apple]TUAWApple: Psystar clones part of a larger conspiracy originally appeared on The Unofficial Apple Weblog (TUAW) on Thu, 04 Dec 2008 07:00:00 EST.
