iPhone at Wal-Mart? Steve, Say it Aint So!
Apple (AAPL) will soon be selling its industry leading, flagship product at Wal-Mart (WMT)? Yes, we know times are tight, but what does this do to the cachet? To the experience? To the brand? It's not as though there are any Geniuses working at Commodity Central. The only good news is that it's going to be $197 and not $99 as speculated on Saturday. But why not Target (TGT) (pronounced tahr-jey)? While (like Wal-Mart) they have high volume and ruthless cost-cutting, they have a more upscale clientele and image. Yes they have only 1500 US stores vs. 3800 in Wal-Mart (I suspect the deal is US only), but they are already selling the iPod Touch.

Apple rumored to be turning iTunes into a DRM-free music store
We can't count the number of times we've heard from one random source or another that Apple was about to pull the trigger on a subscription-based / 100% DRM-free music service, and given how those have worked out in the past, we'd highly recommend taking this one with a huge dose of salt. French site ElectronLibre has it that Apple will finally offer up all of its music in DRM-free form starting as early as tomorrow, specifically calling out Sony, Universal and Warner as outfits who would join the protection-free cause. Should this happen, it would obviously be a dream come true for ole Steve, but we're still left to wonder what would happen to bitrates, prices and (potentially most important) all other iTMS content. Something tells us Hollywood isn't quite as ready to release its death grip.[Via AppleInsider]Filed under: Portable AudioApple rumored to be turning iTunes into a DRM-free music store originally appeared on Engadget on Mon, 08 Dec 2008 23:11:00 EST. OpenCL 1.0 spec released, GPUs everywhere to get a workout
How time flies -- it was just a few weeks ago that the OpenCL spec was finalized and sent out for final legal review, and now it's here and ready to go. Over 20 partner companies (including AMD, NVIDIA, and, somewhat surprisingly, Intel) have signed on to the parallel programming standard originally proposed by Apple as part of Snow Leopard, and the final spec should allow apps to tap into multi-core CPUs, GPUs, DSPs and even variants of the Cell chip for everything from raw number crunching to interfacing with OpenGL. Sounds hot -- now we'll just have to see how Microsoft counters with the GPU acceleration expected to be built into Windows 7.Filed under: Desktops, LaptopsOpenCL 1.0 spec released, GPUs everywhere to get a workout originally appeared on Engadget on Mon, 08 Dec 2008 22:51:00 EST. Android Devices for Developers
No-contract, SIM-unlocked G1 for $399, intended for use by developers. So would this just work if you pop in the SIM from an iPhone 3G on AT&T? Update: Readers say yes, it should work. The scenario I’m envisioning is that iPhone developers who are curious about Android would be far more likely to spend $400 once than to sign up for a two-year contract they’re only planning to use for development and testing. I’d still like to see a $250 non-phone Android device like the iPod Touch, though. â

Bloomberg: Wal-Mart to Sell iPhones Later This Month
No word on pricing, but they quote often-wrong analyst Shaw Wu endorsing the “$99 4 GB iPhone only at Wal-Mart” rumor that Boy Genius Report published last week. That seems unlikely to me. iPhone and iPod storage capacities to go up, not down, over time. Apple hasn’t sold 4 GB iPhones since last summer. And the difference in terms of component costs between 8 and 4 GB of flash memory is not $100 — Apple would make less profit on each one sold. My guess is that Wal-Mart will be selling the same 8 and 16 GB iPhones as everyone else, but for like $197/297 instead of $199/299. â

Now That Rumors Have Subsided: Is a $99 iPhone Good or Bad?
Now that recent rumors of a $99 iPhone seem to have been settled — Wal-Mart will sell the 8GB model for $197 — we can get back to the broader discussion of just what an eventual $99 iPhone could mean to Apple. I believe the answer to the question depends on just what a $99 iPhone is. Prior to the latest rumors, it was usually discussed as some sort of âiPhone nano.â Maybe a flip phone, and generally acknowledged to be much more limited than the current iPhone. I'm sure these rumors will creep up again soon. (more…) Concentric Hosted IT Solutions and Web Hosting Click here to save cost on your IT demands

Earn Money With Your iPhone 3G
My iPhone bleeds money. I buy apps, the bulk of which I never look at again. My monthly bill, in order to guarantee enough data available, is pretty expensive, especially when compared to what I was paying for earlier phones. And, to top it all of, I buy tons of accessories for my iPhone, spoiling it like a loving grandparent. Occasionally (not often, but occasionally), I find myself asking what my iPhone has ever done to pay me back? Yes, it's a great tool, but I mean really pay me back, in cold, hard cash. Now, the folks at Navizon have come up with a way for you to get a little return on your investment. Basically, Navizon adds to the basic location services of your iPhone. Your handset can determine your location using a combination of cell towers, Wi-Fi, and GPS, but using the included Maps application, you have no way of knowing which is active at any given time. Navizon displays your position (on Yahoo!, rather than Google Maps), but it also displays a little badge to let you know which method is being used to determine where you are. That way I know, for example, why the map was showing me as located three blocks North of where I actually am. The answer? My phone was only using cell tower data to find me. You can also take advantage of built-in buddy features to locate friends or family, if they're using Navizon's service. You can also configure alerts by logging on to the website to receive notifications by email or web when your buddies enter into specific areas you designate. Mysterious new Nokia touchscreen interface and handset unveiled (sort of)
In a presentation given at Nokia's Capital Markets Day 2008 last week the company quietly displayed a previously unseen handset, complete with an edge-to-edge touchscreen and subtle, attractive stylings. Perhaps even more interesting is that the screen is sporting an all-new heretofore unseen S60 touchscreen interface, giving hope to folks let down by S60 5th Edition's minor changes to the formula. Unfortunately, Nokia hasn't made any other reference to this phone or the revised OS, and could have very well trotted them out as a proof of concept of the company's direction -- particularly likely due to the fact that they were trying hard to butter up investors at the meeting. Still, the "Tube" started off as little more than a presentation (complete with hints at interface improvements that have yet to emerge), and look how that ended up.[Warning: PDF link; via Boy Genius Report]Gallery: Nokia Capital Market Day Presentation highlightsFiled under: Cellphones, HandheldsMysterious new Nokia touchscreen interface and handset unveiled (sort of) originally appeared on Engadget on Mon, 08 Dec 2008 16:28:00 EST. Rumored Intel roadmap names next Atom "Medfield"
Rumors are swirling about Intel's roadmap of forthcoming netbook and handheld processors, which apparently showed up in a recent report by UBS. The roadmap seems to confirm the previously seen Pineview, and codenames its successor "Medfield," which is to be built on 32-nanometer process technology. Pineview, after some speculation, seems to have been nailed down as a 45-nanometer chip, and will be released in 2009, while Medfield, a complete system-on-chip, will follow in 2010. Medfield will have two variants, one for netbooks rumored to use the current integrated GPU, and one for MIDs, which is said to carry a PowerVR graphics core like the one used in the iPhone. Intel has apparently confirmed the codename "Medfield," but, when questioned, wouldn't answer to allegations that the person who'd come up with the moniker had been fired on grounds of being the least creative namer in the history of naming. iHome's iH15W iPod stereo changes colors, could become annoying
Generally speaking, iHome produces fairly respectable kit. Sure, it's almost all involved directly with Apple's iPod or some random alarm clock (or a mixture of the two), but there's nothing intrinsically wrong with offering up a narrow range of products. To that end, we present the iH15W, an iPod-friendly stereo box that actually changes colors on a whim. The LED-infused cube houses two Reson8 speakers, an iPod dock, a 3.5-millimeter auxiliary port and two convenient carry handles. If you can honestly say you prefer your boombox to change hues along with your mood, you can plunk down $59.99 right now and get sassy.[Via ChipChick]Filed under: Peripherals, Portable AudioiHome's iH15W iPod stereo changes colors, could become annoying originally appeared on Engadget on Mon, 08 Dec 2008 15:36:00 EST. Wal-Mart to Sell iPhones
News broke yesterday that Wal-Mart will indeed be selling Apple's iPhone, most likely by the end of December. The source of the information is employee training materials, and employees of the U.S.-based retail giant themselves. Wal-Mart is still keeping mum about the news, having made no official statement as of yet. Early speculation held that the 4GB iPhone would make a return, at a new, $99 price point, designed to attract frugal customers in increasingly uncertain economic times. Today's reports, supported by a number of sources and documents, maintain that a $99 iPhone is unlikely, and that Wal-Mart will instead offer a $2 discount, selling the 8GB model for $197, including contract discount. Analyst Andy Hargreaves of Pacific Crest Securities told Reuters that Apple, while unlikely to cut a deal that would affect its profit margins, is probably seeking distribution through Wal-Mart in order to access different market demographics. UBS analyst Maynard Um, on the other hand, thinks a Wal-Mart deal alone will not be enough to broaden the iPhone's reach, and suggests it should instead be only a first step to even more distribution deals with large retailers. Details remain unclear, and conflicting reports from various sources indicate that nothing is confirmed, besides the iPhone's imminent arrival. The arrival date, for instance, is cited by Bloomberg as December 28, but by CNN Money as possibly sometime before Christmas. Likewise pricing and storage space options, with Boy Genius Reports still maintaining that the $99 4GB model is a possibility. Apple has refused to comment on any rumors or speculation at this point. Energizer to debut new, longer-lived Zinc Air Prismatic battery at CES 2009
Energizer's set to unleash a new battery -- dubbed the Zinc Air Prismatic -- at CES in January, which they say will offer three times the juice of similar alkaline and lithium-ion batteries. Promising more runtime for smaller devices, they'll also supposedly be the same size as current, comparable batteries. It's a little vague right now, and we don't have any specifics on life times for specific examples of devices, but it all sure sounds great. We take exciting claims of battery power with a grain of salt, especially from the companies that make them, so we'll just have to wait and see. Then again, we're inclined to take companies with mascots that look like they've marched out of a hallucinogenic nightmare at their word. Conundrum. Filed under: Misc. MacBook Air Acting Up, Just in Time for Holidays
The launch of Apple's new unibody aluminum Macs hasn't been the smoothest ride, for both the company and its loyal customers. There was disappointment over what didn't (Firewire) and what did (HDCP) make it into the new machines. The innovative new trackpad design nearly underwhelmed thanks to a glitch that resulted in it failing to recognize clicks every so often. Finally, two graphics-related issues began cropping up in MacBooks and MacBook Pros, problems which Apple is currently investigating. Click image to see detail Apparently, the MacBook Air was tired of its bulkier cousins getting all the negative attention. Recent reports from users indicated Apple's ultra-portable is also experiencing problems associated with graphics output. Machines are being returned to Apple because of “laid” displays, a problem in which faint, horizontal or slightly angled gray lines appear, spanning the entire width of the notebook's screen. Luckily (or maybe unluckily, depending on your perspective), the lines are said to appear immediately after booting, so you'll know right away if your machine's affected. The photo to the left shows what to look for if you're unsure about your own Air. (more…) Concentric Hosted IT Solutions and Web Hosting Click here to save cost on your IT demands

Add it up and signs abound that Apple's has created a virtuous cycle for its touch platform and the payoff may be coming macroeconomic concerns be damned. Apple's master plan for its touch ecosystem isn't news. In fact, analysts like UBS' Ben Reitzes had been connecting the dots on what iPhone's touch platform would mean for Apple's entire product line back in March 2007.

Access iDisk via Cyberduck to avoid Finder issues
I have nothing but constant trouble with Finder's WebDAV access with iDisk -- every other hour I'm logging in and out of MobileMe, or waiting five minutes to simply copy a file. It's slow, unreliable, and almost unusable. One solution? Access it using the open source Cyberduck program's WebDAV support. If you use QuickConnect from the toolbar, just enter https://idisk.mac.com/membername in the dialog box to connect. For use in a bookmark or from the Open Connection dialog, select WebDAV (HTTP/SSL) as the Protocol and enter /membername in the More Options section.[robg adds: Many years back, we covered using Goliath for iDisk access. Goliath hasn't been updated since 2002, however. I've not had too much trouble with the iDisk in 10.5, but my use is pretty light (mainly for backups). Another alternative is ...

Change Google Gmail Notifier check interval
If you're using Google's Notifier in your menu bar to check your Gmail, you might have noticed that there is no longer an option to change the check interval (or maybe I'm crazy, but I swore it was there before). I think it is currently set to 10 minutes, but I like it to update more often, especially if I've already gone through the mail that is new. You can adjust the interval by clicking on the mail icon and then holding down the Command and Option keys while clicking on Preferences. This will pop open a box for a key/value pair. Use AutocheckInterval as the key (case-sensitive) and then set the interval (in minutes) for it to check as the value.

Save PDF attachments directly to Yojimbo
I stumbled upon this tip today after being frustrated by the two-step process of getting PDF email attachments from Mail into Yojimbo: First save the PDF to disk, then add the PDF to Yojimbo.Instead, Control-clcik the PDF icon or preview that appears in the body of your email message and select Open With, and then pick Yojimbo from the submenu that appears. The PDF is imported into Yojimbo, ready for you to re-name and add tags.

Walmart iPhone probably happening, probably not for $99
We've been hearing rumors of an iPhone at Walmart for a while now, and the only thing that was even mildly interesting about the unlikely pairing was that there was supposedly going to be a $99 4GB model. Well, now we hear that they'll indeed be selling the phone, but (as the ad above would seem to indicate) it's going to be a $197 8GB model -- about 2 bucks cheaper than you can get them for at an Apple or AT&T store, with no mention of a 4GB version at all. So, you're telling us we're going to be able to get this phone for (almost) exactly the same price as before, but now we can buy it at a store where we can also pick up Slim-Fast in bulk and possibly die in a retail trampling? We'll pass.[Thanks, Mike H., Via PC World] Filed under: CellphonesWalmart iPhone probably happening, probably not for $99 originally appeared on Engadget on Mon, 08 Dec 2008 09:27:00 EST. Brothers In Arms for iPhone/iPod Touch
In the course of playing and reviewing a number of iPhone games, I realize I've come to expect, and even allow for, certain shortcomings. I expect lag in a graphics-intensive game. I expect buggy controls that feel less than intuitive. I expect omissions that are promised to be fulfilled in later updates. All of which is why Brothers in Arms: Hour of Heroes ($9.99) caught me off guard. The new shooter from the prolific gameloft (iDP) studio is a polished, pleasurable gaming experience that lacks a lot of the usual iPhone platform caveats users have unfortunately learned to live with. The game belongs to the Brothers in Arms franchise, which began with Gearbox Software's 2005 title Road to Hill 30. The Brothers in Arms series is set in WWII, and console and PC versions feature first-person shooter gameplay mechanics. Hour of Heroes, developed, by gameloft, who also brought the series to the Nintendo DS, is a third-person over-the-shoulder shooter and finally escapes the single-track, limited character control found in similar games like Star Wars: The Force Unleashed. Audioengine puts wires out of work with AW2 wireless iPod adapter
Earlier this year, Audioengine rolled out the practically universal AW1 wireless audio adapter, and we certainly enjoyed our time with it. Now, the outfit is making the anticipated leap to iPod-dom with the sequentially named AW2. Put simply, the kit contains two main pieces: a transmitter that plugs easily into your dock-connecting 'Pod and a USB-based receiver with a 3.5-millimeter auxiliary jack. The system operates on the WiFi frequency band and promises no dropouts, static or interference from CB radios whizzing by your domicile. We should mention, however, that you'll pay quite dearly for the privilege of beaming your tunes sans cables, though it's available now for those who don't mind at $169.[Via GadgetReview]Filed under: Peripherals, Portable Audio, WirelessAudioengine puts wires out of work with AW2 wireless iPod adapter originally appeared on Engadget on Mon, 08 Dec 2008 08:37:00 EST. Lesson learned from my biggest business mistake
My biggest mistake (at least in terms of income avoided) was not believing in the world wide web in 1994. It's not like I didn't know about it. I had written a book called "Best of the Net". I'd even written the cover story for some now-defunct magazine on how to surf the internet. But in those days, the Net referred to Archie and Veronica and the online services... there was no real browser, no search engines to speak of, just a bunch of conferences and some guys in the Valley. Not only did I ignore it, I actively ignored it. I didn't register hundreds of domain names or build out the website for Yoyodyne beyond much of a placeholder. Instead of expanding my online game show/promotions company into the web, we focused on Microsoft's Chicago service and Apple's eWorld. Sigh. Instead of building a search engine, I wrote a book called The Smiley Dictionary. Earnings to date: $10,000 or so. I'm going into all this painful detail to let you know what an idiot I was. How many clues were just sitting there, how much access I had, how deliberate I was in ignoring them. Why? I think the answer is simple: Because the rules of this new business didn't match the rules of my existing business. Businesses live in ecosystems. A series of rules and assumptions that, taken together, make a thriving mechanism Example: The oil ecosystem involves prospecting, drilling, transporting, refining, etc. If you don't understand the role of automobiles or plastics in the oil industry, then you don't understand the industry. You don't 'get it.' On the other hand, if you understand the ecosystem of automobiles and of oil, then the ecosystem of windmills on homes and hydrogen in cars may be just too weird to grasp. The ecosystem of the worldwide web was just being filled in. It had some assumptions clearly laid out (no money to view the content) and some waiting to be sketched in (can attention turn into cash?). But for someone in the business of selling books and internet content, this seemed impossible. Different rules, rules I didn't understand and couldn't accept. And that's where we get stuck. We get stuck because we believe that the rules of our ecosystem are permanent and transferable. In fact, they are almost always temporary and rarely transferable. My approach now is simple: take a look at the rules of the new ecosystem. Do they make sense? Is it possible they'll come to pass? If they do, what happens to you?

Apple's Staunch Defense of the iPod Ecosystem
Apple might be unfairly blocking rival software makers who want to sell music for its iPhone, according to some rivals and a technology rights group. The iTunes store accounts for four out of five songs sold on the Internet in the United States and is becoming more important as CDs fade. A milestone was reached last month when Atlantic Records announced digital sales had surpassed CD sales. Everyone agrees Apple achieved its dominance in music downloads and players with good products and marketing, which makes it entirely legal.

Apple vs. Dell vs. Lenovo: Got to Love Choices
The economic pressure continues to increase and there is a reasonably good chance that we'll be down to one large car company in the U.S. by this time next year -- Ford, which appears to be the only one that isn't saying it won't survive without a massive cash infusion from the U.S. government. In the PC space, there are three companies being watched closely: Apple and Dell in the U.S. and Lenovo in China. Apple was growing at an incredible rate and has large reserves, but now -- thanks to the economic collapse -- it may have PC products priced out of the market.

Freeverse shows off iPhone TV-out proof-of-concept
The team over at Freeverse have played around with the iPhone's new undocumented feature that allows apps to use the TV-out function, and have added the feature to a version of their game Moto Chaser. The user uses the iPhone as a controller to tilt the bike from one side to another while racing down a track. There is one little problem, though. The phone's screen doesn't work while any of this is happening, so you can't actually use it for any buttons. That's a pretty serious limitation that will have to be overcome before this becomes truly useful for play on an external device. Freeverse does not plan to add this feature to Moto Chaser anytime soon, regardless. At least, not until Apple makes it official.
