Daily Apple: Gesture Patents, 10.5.6 Danger, Hobo Justice, iPrint, & Brighter Pics
Old Dog, New Tricks Via Multitouch - I remember crudely wrestling with swipe gestures on my various Palm pilots over the years. It wasn't perfect, but I did appreciate the quick delete function that a backwards stroke of the stylus resulted in. Apple may be working on putting in some similar gesture controls in upcoming firmware updates, or so some recent patent applications would seem to indicate. 10.5.6 Could Break Your Pro - At least one user got the awesome Christmas gift of a broken MacBook Pro this year, courtesy of Apple themselves via the recent 10.5.6 update. Apparently, the update ran his battery to zero, necessitating a restart. Upon restart, the Apple logo would briefly appear, followed by black screen. Eventually, he found a fix, but it wasn't easy, and it wasn't fun. Homeless Sue Apple - Because it's easier not to care when you've got those white earbuds in, this homeless group are suing Apple. Not, obviously, real, but I have to admit I read quite a bit before I caught on. I can't be blamed, I'm experiencing serious turkey coma. iPrint for iPhone Prints to HP Printers Wirelessly - I had some fun amazing my relatives with HP iPrint over the holidays this year. My grandmother was getting genuinely freaked out, since I kept surreptitiously snapping photos and then sending them to the main floor printer, located right behind her head. Of course, without a flash, most of those photos were indecipherable, but the ones that turned out definitely impressed. Xenon Flash for iPhone - Speaking of the iPhone's lack of camera flash, this case from Snapture can provide yours with a hardware one, good for a thousand uses. It uses Xenon, just like fancy-pants car headlights. Concentric Hosted IT Solutions and Web Hosting Click here to save cost on your IT demands

Dell Adamo rumored to boast DisplayPort, Blu-ray drive
Can you feel it? Dell's Adamo is just about here, and the anticipation is palpable. We already learned that the unit's 45-watt power adapter wouldn't be anything special, but a Google cache shot of accessories and such from Dell's own website is giving us a presumed look at what could be announced alongside the ultraportable. For starters, we get the impression that it'll boast DisplayPort (judging by the DisplayPort-to-HDMI / VGA / etc. adapters) and at least have an option for a 2x Blu-ray combo drive. We're also seeing 250GB / 500GB internal / external SATA drives and an auto / air adapter for powering the machine in your vehicle / personally owned 747. Only the suits in Round Rock know if these will actually come to fruition, but honestly, why bother hosting these up on your website if they weren't on the way?[Via Electronista]Filed under: Laptops, PeripheralsDell Adamo rumored to boast DisplayPort, Blu-ray drive originally appeared on Engadget on Fri, 26 Dec 2008 20:54:00 EST. Fixing Poor Laptop Ergonomics
Got a MacBook for Christmas? I've used laptop computers almost exclusively for a dozen years now, and they've been great, but for day in, day out, workhorse duty the standard laptop configuration does have serious ergonomic deficiencies. If you position the computer high enough for comfortable and ergonomically healthy viewing angle to the screen, your wrists will be cranked down in unhealthy ape-hanger mode, stressing soft connective tissues, including the troublesome carpal tunnel where the brachial nerves pass through your wrists to your hands. Apple and Microsoft: The Difference in OS Sales Models
In a previous article I discussed Appleâs approach to cloning and how far they should go in shutting down that business. This led to the question âwhy canât I just buy Mac OS X and install it on any hardware I want?â, which led to a pretty typical answer that the boxed OS X is sold as an upgrade, not a new (or full) license. This answer is sometimes challenged, and brings up the idea of what an âupgradeâ is in the Mac world as opposed to Microsoft. This is not an Apple vs. Microsoft argument. It simply attempts to outline the difference in each one's approach to OS sales, and why each uses the sales model it does. Rather than claim one is ârightâ, I believe each is right for the business model it supports. Where Apple may be handicapped in terms of perception is that Microsoftâs approach is well-known and understood. Microsoft could point out that ~95 percent of the planet probably âgetsâ their model. Apple, for all their recent success — so much so that many Apple fans forget theyâre still a drop in the Atlantic in terms of global market share — employs a different approach that, when viewed through Microsoftâs, might seem a bit strange. AT&T letting go of 8GB refurb iPhone 3Gs for $99 on contract
Ha, you or someone you love just paid full retail for an iPhone 3G a few days ago, didn't you? We've always heard that the best deals come after Christmas, but people just never learn. All smack talk aside, those who didn't get a new cellie under the tree, but did acquire a Benjamin or so courtesy of cash-stuffed holiday cards, can certainly score a big deal today. AT&T is now offering the 8GB iPhone 3G in refurbished form for just $99 with a two-year agreement, while the 16GB refurb is $199 on contract in either black or white. Call us crazy, but we don't foresee these hanging around in stock for too awfully long.[Thanks, Brenson]Filed under: CellphonesAT&T letting go of 8GB refurb iPhone 3Gs for $99 on contract originally appeared on Engadget on Fri, 26 Dec 2008 14:43:00 EST. My Top 5 iPhone Apps of 2008: A War of Attrition
It was a long, drawn out, brutal affair. Finally, after many months, five apps have emerged victorious, and earned a long-term place on my iPhone's home screen. There are a lot of apps that I'm initially impressed with, and which actually work really well, or have interesting features, but it takes something special for me to actually continue using one beyond an initial honeymoon period. A lot of the apps that meet this criteria end up helping me work, or distract me from work, but in a lasting way. 5 - Last.fm [Free] This one is sure to provoke cries of “What about Pandora?”, “Pandora FTW”, etc. The sad fact is that Pandora doesn't work here in Canada. The site now only supports U.S. users, so we're out of luck. But we still have Last.fm, and despite the fact that some claim its recommendation engine isn't nearly as effective, it works well enough that I can plug it in and forget it for an entire day of work, and still be guaranteed a short list of artists to look up, too. Apple files patent for gesture-based text editing
An Apple patent unearthed by Mac Rumors named Swipe Gestures for Touch Screen Keyboards suggests a future direction the company might be taking which would substantially change interaction with devices like the iPhone. According to the document, the new system would allow for simple finger gestures like swipes to the left or right to control basic functions of text editing. Some movements outlined in the application include a left swipe for deletion of characters, right swipes for a space, and a swipe down in place of the return key. Of course, these types of gestures are nothing new (and frankly, nothing patentable we suspect), as applications on the company's own devices -- namely the jailbreak-only MobileTerminal -- feature almost this exact implementation of gesture control. Still, adding in this functionality to the software's existing tools would likely improve navigation and input, and opens the door for solutions to the lingering (and annoying) copy / paste problems Apple seems to have.[Via Mac Rumors]Filed under: CellphonesApple files patent for gesture-based text editing originally appeared on Engadget on Fri, 26 Dec 2008 10:58:00 EST. Creative's Zii "Stemcell Computing" is not likely to be awesome
Look, we have no idea what's going on here, and you know what? Maybe it's better that way. Creative -- a company always on the edge -- has clearly gone off the deep end. A new teaser on its site promises that "Everything you know is about to change..." and forwards on to the dubious Zii.com -- with a logo that couldn't be more obvious about its Wii inspiration. Four leaf clovers shimmer and shake, and a trademarked term chills us to our very core: Stemcell Computing. Yeah, how about no. Friday Favorite: Mac HelpMate
Filed under: Software, Cool tools, Troubleshooting, Friday FavoriteI'll open this Friday Favorite with a caveat -- Mac HelpMate is not an app that just anyone is going to want to license. However, if you're a Mac consultant and/or do system support for many Mac users, this is an application you should consider. Mac HelpMate is the brainchild of Dean Shavit, an Apple Certified System Administrator based in Chicago, Illinois. Dean's goal in producing Mac HelpMate was to eliminate many of the issues that Mac support professionals deal with when trying to perform remote support tasks for their clients. What are those issues? Usually, they consist of trying to reach the end user's network through a maze of firewalls and routers. For example, one of the major issues with Apple's Back To My Mac remote access and control technology is that it doesn't work with many cable or DSL modems that don't support UPnP (Universal Plug-and-Play) or NAT-PMP (NAT - Port Mapping Protocol). Mac HelpMate provides zero-configuration remote access through a proxy server run by Shavit's company, eliminating the hassles of trying to talk clients through configuration of their Macs and network hardware.Continue reading Friday Favorite: Mac HelpMateTUAWFriday Favorite: Mac HelpMate originally appeared on The Unofficial Apple Weblog (TUAW) on Fri, 26 Dec 2008 08:00:00 EST. ASUS officially launches iPod-friendly AIR3 internet radio
Not that this debut is anything shocking (thanks, FCC!), but we're still stoked to see ASUS get all official with its AIR3 sound system. Sure, it's not exactly treading on new ground, but for those looking for a touch more functionality in their iPod sound system, the internet radio inclusion is one that's much appreciated. ASUS talks pretty big about the device's audio prowess, noting that it utilizes a Texas Instruments Class-D amplifier and HDSS (High Definition Sound Standard) certified drivers. Also of note, the unit includes S-Video / composite video outs and supports UPnP sharing via 802.11b/g WiFi or Ethernet; if that's not enough to catch your eye, there's also a useful auxiliary input and built-in weather forecast display that pulls down updates from the world wide web. As ASUS always does, we're left hangin' sans a price or release date, but we suppose it's teaching us a lesson in patience... or something.[Via iPodNN]Filed under: Home EntertainmentASUS officially launches iPod-friendly AIR3 internet radio originally appeared on Engadget on Fri, 26 Dec 2008 07:34:00 EST. Musings on Apple's Next CEO
Who can replace Steve Jobs? When Apple needed a substitute after its iconic CEO backed out of delivering his annual keynote at the upcoming Macworld conference, it tapped Phil Schiller, its senior vice president of worldwide marketing. The announcement last week that Schiller will fill in for Jobs at next month's event begs a larger question: Who might step into Jobs' shoes when he eventually departs Apple? Jobs has been the public face of Apple for more than a decade, and there's no reason to assume the man in the trademark rimless glasses and black mock-turtleneck shirt will leave any day soon.

Chinese Youth Will Propel Economic and Political Changes
My wife, Jessica Lo, and I recently had the occasion to be introduced to Tony Blair. It was our first time meeting him, and I must say he is incredibly charismatic. He commands attention and confidence in him in a way few, even the most polished politician we know, can garner. He is quite opposite to Larry Summers or Chen Shui-Bian as I have written before for Seeking Alpha. We had a nice discussion with Mr. Blair on Chinese youth and how their optimism and confidence will help propel changes in China in both the business and political arenas in a good way. As China's economy begins to waver from the financial crisis, much of its future lies with Chinese youth who will become the major drivers for growth and how they react to a downturn. If they continue spending, then domestic consumption will be able to take up 50% of the economy vs. the 1/3 now as we predict will happen in the next 5 years. Or, if their salary and bonus increases are not realized during the Chinese New Year period, then retail sales will be hit hard in February and March and fall the way exports have as they cut back on spending.
